Qunol · four back labels
Is Qunol CoQ10 Good? What the Ultra, Mega and Extra Strength Labels Say
The best Qunol gets the form and the dose right. None of them has GG, a building block a statin also blocks.

Qunol is one of the easiest CoQ10 brands to find. Qunol Ultra 100 mg has more Amazon ratings than any other bottle on this page.
So is Qunol good? Some Qunol bottles get the form and the dose right. But none of them meets all five checks this page reads on the back label.
And none of them has GG, short for geranylgeraniol. It's a building block a statin also blocks. Each of these words gets its own part below.
First, what CoQ10 is. CoQ10, short for coenzyme Q10, is something your own body makes. Your cells use it to turn food into energy.
CoQ10 levels drop with age*. A statin, the daily pill many people take for cholesterol, lowers blood CoQ10 too. That is why so many people buy a bottle.
Qunol sells more than one CoQ10. The ones you'll see most are called Ultra, Mega and Extra Strength. Ultra comes in two sizes.
The names make them sound like weaker and stronger versions of one thing. They're not. Inside, they are different formulas.
Ultra holds ubiquinone, the older form of CoQ10 your body has to change first. Mega and Extra Strength hold ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form.
Mega and Extra Strength say ubiquinol on the front. Ultra never names its form, and that means the older form. The oil and the extras are only listed on the back.
So there are four Qunol labels to read. This page reads each one with you, a line at a time. Then it puts them next to EQ10, a CoQ10 made for people on a statin.
Before the bottles
The five checks, read on a Qunol label
Every CoQ10 bottle has a Supplement Facts box on the back. It's the small black-and-white panel that lists the amounts.
Right under it is a line that starts with Other ingredients. Between the two, five lines tell you almost everything about a bottle. This page calls them the five checks.
Each check gets its own short part below. You'll see what it is, why it matters, and where to find it on a Qunol label.
Check 1 of 5 · Form
Ultra holds one form of CoQ10. Mega and Extra Strength hold the other.

Form
CoQ10 comes in two forms. Ubiquinol is the ready-to-use form. It's the form your blood already carries.
Ubiquinone is the older form. Your body has to change it into ubiquinol first.
Many popular bottles hold ubiquinone. Not every box tells you which form is inside.
Qunol shows this well. Both Ultra bottles hold ubiquinone. The Ultra label doesn't name a form, and that means the older form.
Mega and Extra Strength hold ubiquinol. It's made by Kaneka, the Japanese company that made the first ubiquinol.
So two Qunol boxes on the same shelf can hold two different forms. If you take CoQ10 every day, pick the form your blood already carries.
In the Supplement Facts box, find the line that starts with Coenzyme Q10, or with Ubiquinol. Read the word right after it.
Ubiquinol meets this check. Ubiquinone, or Coenzyme Q10 with no form named, is the older form.
Check 2 of 5 · Dose
How much CoQ10 sits in one Qunol softgel

Dose
The biggest thing on the front of a Qunol box is a number. It's the dose, in mg, short for milligrams.
That number is for one softgel, a soft capsule filled with oil, not for the whole bottle.
This check asks for 200 mg or more in one softgel. That's the amount used in many CoQ10 studies, including studies of people on a statin.
Qunol Mega and the smaller Ultra hold 100 mg in each softgel. With those, you'd take two a day to get the same amount.
The bigger Ultra and Extra Strength hold 200 mg in one softgel. With those, one a day meets the Dose check.
Two smaller softgels do add up to the same amount. This check is about getting it in one softgel. One a day is easier to keep up, next to your other pills.
Find Serving size near the top of the Supplement Facts box. If it says 1 softgel, read the mg on the CoQ10 line.
If the serving size says 2 softgels, halve the number. That gives you the amount in one.
Check 3 of 5 · Carrier
What the CoQ10 in a Qunol softgel is dissolved in

Carrier
CoQ10 is a lot like butter. It dissolves in fat, not in water.
So a good softgel holds the CoQ10 already dissolved in an oil. That oil is called the carrier.
In head-to-head studies, a capsule of dry powder, with no oil, came last. CoQ10 in oil came first. Every Qunol softgel here does use an oil.
Researchers once compared seven CoQ10 bottles, all with the same dose on the label. The best got four times more into the blood than the worst. What made the difference was how each softgel was made, not the number on the front.
Which oil counts too. Olive oil is the plain kitchen oil many people prefer over seed oils. It gets the full check.
Three of the Qunol bottles here use MCT oil, a refined oil made from coconut or palm oil. Their labels say theirs is made from palm oil. Palm oil is on the Clean label list in check 5, so those three miss here.
Extra Strength also uses MCT oil, but its label doesn't name the plant. That's close, but not quite.
Read the first oil under Other ingredients. Olive oil meets this check.
Another named oil, like sunflower oil, or MCT oil that doesn't name its plant, still carries the CoQ10. That's close, but not quite. MCT oil made from palm oil, soybean oil, or no oil at all misses it.
Check 4 of 5 · GG
GG, the building block no Qunol label lists
GG
GG is short for geranylgeraniol. Your body makes it on the same pathway as CoQ10. A pathway is a chain of steps inside your cells.
GG is made on the branch of that pathway that isn't CoQ10.
A statin works on the same pathway your body uses to make CoQ10. It turns that whole pathway down. CoQ10 is one of the things made on it.
Blood CoQ10 goes down on a statin. That has been measured. And because GG sits on the same pathway, a statin also blocks GG.
A regular CoQ10 bottle only puts CoQ10 back. EQ10 adds GG back too. The idea: refill and restart, not just refill.
In other words: put back both CoQ10 and GG, not only CoQ10.
Look right under the CoQ10 line in the Supplement Facts box. GG gets a line of its own there, as geranylgeraniol or GG, with an amount next to it.
No line means no GG. None of the four Qunol labels has that line.
Check 5 of 5 · Clean label
What else is inside a Qunol softgel
Clean label
Under the Supplement Facts box sits a line most people skip. It starts with Other ingredients.
It lists everything else in the softgel: the shell, the oil, and anything added to help the factory.
You may take this every day for years. So a short list, where each part has a reason to be there, is the one to want.
A clean label has no palm oil and no soybean oil. A softgel you take every day doesn't need either one.
It has no polysorbate 80, a man-made additive that helps oil and water mix. And no soy lecithin, a soy-based additive that helps things mix.
It should also have no added vitamin E. That's vitamin E with its own line in the Supplement Facts box. A CoQ10 softgel doesn't need an extra vitamin on top.
Last, no titanium dioxide, a white coloring. And nothing bioengineered, the word US labels use for genetically modified.
Some additives aren't on this list, but a softgel doesn't need them either. Sunflower lecithin is one. They count as close, but not quite.
Read the whole Other ingredients line, not just the first word. Qunol Ultra and Qunol Mega list palm oil and polysorbate 80. Both Ultra bottles also add vitamin E.
The smaller Ultra also lists soy lecithin.
The Extra Strength list is shorter. It has sunflower lecithin, which is close but not quite. Gelatin, glycerin and water are fine, because they make the shell.

Give your bottle one mark for each yes.
The best Qunol here gets two marks, for Form and Dose. No Qunol label has a line for GG.
GG only ever shows up as its own line in the Supplement Facts box. That line is the one to look for.

Inside EQ10
EQ10's label, and where it differs from the best Qunol
Here is the whole EQ10 label, line by line. It's short, so it doesn't take long.
Supplement Facts
Serving size: 1 softgel
Amount per serving% Daily Value
Ubiquinol CoQ10, Kaneka®200 mg †
Trans-geranylgeraniol, GG60 mg †
† Daily Value not established.
Other ingredients: olive oil, the fat-soluble carrier; gelatin; glycerin; purified water; ascorbyl palmitate, an antioxidant.
Ubiquinol, 200 mg
The first line is ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form of CoQ10. It's made by Kaneka, the same company behind the ubiquinol in Qunol Mega and Qunol Extra Strength.
So on the Form check, the best Qunol and EQ10 are alike. The differences start on the next line.
GG, 60 mg
The second line is GG, short for geranylgeraniol. It's the building block a statin also blocks. None of the Qunol labels has a line like it.
EQ10 adds it back. The idea: refill and restart, not just refill.
Olive oil as the carrier
Under that come the other ingredients. Olive oil comes first. It's the carrier, the oil the CoQ10 is dissolved in.
Every Qunol here uses MCT oil instead.
Then come gelatin, glycerin and purified water, which make the softgel shell. And ascorbyl palmitate, a form of vitamin C that keeps the oil fresh. Nothing else is on the label.
You take one small softgel a day, in the morning with food. If you take a statin, EQ10 is made to take next to it, not in place of it.
Asked often
Qunol, answered
Is Qunol a good brand?
Qunol is easy to find and widely rated. How good a bottle is depends on the formula inside, and Qunol sells several.
The best one here is Extra Strength. It meets the Form and Dose checks. None of the Qunol bottles has GG.
Qunol or Doctor's Best?
The best bottle from each brand is a ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form.
The Doctor's Best Ubiquinol bottle meets three checks: Form, Dose and Carrier. Its oil is olive oil, with some MCT oil. Qunol Extra Strength meets two, Form and Dose.
Neither one has GG.
Qunol or Kirkland: which is better?
Kirkland is Costco's own brand. It holds 300 mg in each softgel, so it meets the Dose check.
So does the bigger Qunol Ultra. The smaller Ultra doesn't.
Both brands hold ubiquinone, the older form, and neither has GG. Kirkland's oil is soybean oil. Qunol Ultra uses MCT oil made from palm oil.
Qunol or Nature Made?
Nature Made holds ubiquinone, the older form, in soybean oil. It carries the USP Verified seal. That's a mark from an outside group that checks the bottle holds what the label says.
The bigger Qunol Ultra and Nature Made each meet one check, the Dose. The smaller Ultra meets none. Neither brand has GG.
Can I take Qunol or EQ10 with my statin?
EQ10 is made to take next to your statin, not in place of it. Many people on a statin take a CoQ10, Qunol included, and say it helps.
Take EQ10 in the morning, with food. Blood levels take about two weeks to settle. It's made to take every day, for months.
In short
Qunol and EQ10, in short
On this page, the best Qunol met two checks. The other three Qunol labels met one or none.
EQ10 met all five, in one small softgel a day:
