Premium CoQ10 brands
Thorne, Garden of Life, Sports Research: Is a Premium CoQ10 Better?
Thorne, Garden of Life and Sports Research hold the older form of CoQ10. Healthy Origins comes closest.

Thorne, Garden of Life and Sports Research are good brands. Each one has a real seal or certification.
The back label tells a different story. All three hold ubiquinone, the older form of CoQ10. Your body has to change it first.
Healthy Origins comes closest. It uses ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form.
If CoQ10 is new to you, here is the short version. CoQ10, short for coenzyme Q10, is something your own body makes. Your cells use it to turn food into energy.
CoQ10 levels drop with age*. Many people also take a statin, a daily pill for cholesterol. Blood CoQ10 goes down on a statin, and that has been measured.
A statin also blocks a building block called GG. None of the four premium bottles here has GG on its label.
So a lot of people add a CoQ10 bottle, and many pick a name they trust. That makes sense.
This page reads what those trusted labels say, one line at a time. Then it puts them next to EQ10, a CoQ10 made for people on a statin.
Five lines to read
What a seal covers, and what the back label adds
Each of these brands has a seal or certification. Thorne is NSF certified, a seal from an outside tester.
Garden of Life and Sports Research carry the Non-GMO Project Verified seal. It says nothing in the bottle is genetically modified.
A seal like that is worth having. It still doesn't tell you the form of CoQ10, how much sits in one serving, or the oil it's in.
You find those in the Supplement Facts box, the panel with the amounts. The Other ingredients line sits under it. The five checks all sit in those two places.
Check 1 of 5 · Form
Which form of CoQ10 each brand uses

Form
CoQ10 comes in two forms. Ubiquinol is the ready-to-use form. It's the form your blood already carries.
Ubiquinone is the older form. Your body has to change it into ubiquinol first.
A higher price doesn't decide the form. Thorne, Garden of Life and Sports Research all use ubiquinone.
Healthy Origins uses Kaneka ubiquinol. Kaneka is the Japanese company that made the first ubiquinol.
If you pick a CoQ10 to take every day, pick the form your blood already carries.
Find the CoQ10 line in the Supplement Facts box. It may start with Coenzyme Q10, or with Ubiquinol.
The word ubiquinol meets this check. Ubiquinone, or no form named at all, means the older form.
Check 2 of 5 · Dose
How much sits in one gelcap, capsule or softgel

Dose
The dose is the number in mg, short for milligrams. It's how much CoQ10 sits in one serving.
Premium brands come in different shapes. Thorne makes a gelcap, a soft capsule. Garden of Life makes a vegan capsule, with no animal gelatin.
Sports Research and Healthy Origins make softgels, soft capsules filled with oil.
This check asks for 200 mg or more in one of them. Then one a day gets you there.
200 mg a day is the amount used in many CoQ10 studies. That includes studies of people on a statin.
Garden of Life and Healthy Origins hold 200 mg in one. So they meet this check.
Thorne and Sports Research hold 100 mg in each. Two of them add up to the same amount, but this check is about getting it all in one. One a day is easier to keep up.
Read Serving size first. Then read the mg on the CoQ10 line.
If the serving size says two, one of them holds half of that number.
Check 3 of 5 · Carrier
The oil each brand dissolves its CoQ10 in
Carrier
CoQ10 is a lot like butter. It dissolves in fat, not in water.
So a good CoQ10 comes dissolved in an oil. That oil is called the carrier.
In head-to-head studies, the dry powder capsule came last. CoQ10 in oil came first.
Each premium bottle here has an oil in it, which is good. Thorne lists flaxseed oil. Garden of Life uses chia seed oil.
Sports Research uses coconut MCT oil, a refined oil. Healthy Origins uses MCT oil too.
None of them uses olive oil, the simple kitchen oil you already know. Only olive oil gets the ✓.
Any other named oil still carries the CoQ10. So each of these four gets the ! mark, which means close, but not quite.
Find the oil in the list. It's often the first word under Other ingredients. Some brands list it in the Supplement Facts box instead.
Olive oil meets this check. Another named oil gets the ! mark. No oil at all is a miss.
Check 4 of 5 · GG
GG, the line none of the premium bottles has

GG
GG is short for geranylgeraniol. It's a building block your body makes on the same pathway as CoQ10.
A pathway is a chain of steps inside your cells. GG comes from the same pathway, the branch that isn't CoQ10.
A statin works on that pathway. It turns the whole pathway down. CoQ10 is one of the things made on it, and GG is another.
Most CoQ10 bottles, the premium ones too, only put CoQ10 back. EQ10 adds GG back as well.
The idea: refill and restart, not just refill. In other words, put back both CoQ10 and GG, not only CoQ10.
If you take a statin, this is the check that sets bottles apart. EQ10 is made to take alongside it, and you keep taking your statin as usual.
Look right under the CoQ10 line. GG gets a line of its own, with an amount next to it. No line means no GG.
Thorne, Garden of Life, Sports Research and Healthy Origins have no such line.
Check 5 of 5 · Clean label
What else each brand puts in
Clean label
Under the Supplement Facts box sits a line called Other ingredients. It lists the shell, the oil and anything added along the way.
Gelatin, glycerin and water are fine. They're what a softgel shell is made of.
People often pick a premium brand for a clean label. So this is a fair check to hold them to.
A clean list has no palm oil and no soybean oil. No polysorbate 80, a man-made additive that helps oil and water mix.
No soy lecithin, a soy-based additive. No titanium dioxide, a white coloring. And nothing bioengineered, the word US labels use for genetically modified.
No added vitamin E either. That's vitamin E with its own line and a % Daily Value, the share of a day's need in one serving. A CoQ10 doesn't need a vitamin dose on top.
Some extras aren't on this list, but a CoQ10 doesn't need them either. They get the ! mark, which means close, but not quite.
Read the whole Other ingredients line. If none of those words is on it, the bottle gets a ✓.
Sports Research has a short list with none of them, so it meets this check.
Thorne adds soy monoglycerides, a fat made from soy. It isn't on the list, but it's an extra, so Thorne gets the ! mark.
Garden of Life adds soy tocopherols, a little vitamin E from soy that keeps the oil fresh. It has no % Daily Value, so it's an extra, not added vitamin E.
Healthy Origins adds sunflower lecithin, an additive made from sunflowers that helps things mix. That's an extra too.

Side by side
Four premium brands and EQ10, side by side
Here are all five bottles, read from their back labels. EQ10 comes first, in the amber column. Each column head shows how many of the five checks that bottle meets.
The other four follow in order of how many checks they meet. Healthy Origins is next, then Garden of Life, Sports Research and Thorne.
Bottles that meet the same number of checks are in no particular order.

Other ingredients: olive oil, the fat-soluble carrier; gelatin; glycerin; purified water; ascorbyl palmitate, an antioxidant.
Ubiquinol, 200 mg
The first line is ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form of CoQ10. It's made by Kaneka, the same maker Healthy Origins uses.
One softgel holds 200 mg. So one a day meets the Dose check.
GG, 60 mg
The second line is GG, short for geranylgeraniol. It's the building block a statin also blocks. EQ10 adds it back.
The idea: refill and restart, not just refill.
Olive oil and the shell
Olive oil comes first under Other ingredients. It's the carrier, the oil the CoQ10 is dissolved in.
Gelatin, glycerin and purified water make the softgel shell. Ascorbyl palmitate, a form of vitamin C, keeps the oil fresh. Here is what it leaves out.
- No palm oil
- No soy
- No polysorbate 80
- No sunflower oil
- Nothing bioengineered
Take it in the morning, with food. Blood levels take about two weeks to settle. It's made to take every day, for months, not days.
If you take a statin, EQ10 is made to take alongside it. You keep taking your statin as usual.
