Nature's Bounty CoQ10 review

Is Nature's Bounty CoQ10 Good? What the 200 mg Softgel Really Holds

Nature's Bounty gets the dose right. But it holds ubiquinone, the older form of CoQ10, in rice bran oil.

Five CoQ10 bottles on one shelf, EQ10 first: EQ10 Active CoQ10 · Statin Support, Nature's Bounty Co Q-10 200 mg, Qunol Ultra CoQ10 200 mg, Sports Research CoQ10 100 mg and Nature Made CoQ10 200 mg.
EQ10 first, then the four other bottles on this page.
An example label, with all five checks marked.
An example Supplement Facts label. Numbers show where to look: 1 Form, 2 Dose, 3 Carrier, 4 GG, 5 Clean label.

Nature's Bounty CoQ10 gets one big thing right. Each softgel holds 200 mg of CoQ10.

The rest of the label is weaker. It's ubiquinone, the older form of CoQ10, which your body has to change first.

It's dissolved in rice bran oil, not olive oil. And the current label lists titanium dioxide, a white coloring.

Nature's Bounty is a name many people know from the pharmacy shelf. So when CoQ10 comes up, it's an easy bottle to reach for.

If CoQ10 is new to you, start here. CoQ10, short for coenzyme Q10, is something your own body makes. Your cells use it to turn food into energy.

Many people take a statin, a daily pill for cholesterol. A statin works on the same chain of steps your body uses to make CoQ10. Blood CoQ10 goes down on a statin, and that has been measured.

Most people read only the big number. This page reads the back with you, one line at a time.

Then it puts Nature's Bounty next to three other bottles and EQ10, a CoQ10 made for people on a statin.

Five lines to read

Where the facts sit on a Nature's Bounty bottle

Near the top of the back label is the Supplement Facts box, the panel with the amounts.

Below it is a line that starts with Other ingredients. It lists everything else in the softgel.

The five checks all sit in those two places. Each one gets its own short section below.

Check 1 of 5 · Form

Is Nature's Bounty ubiquinol or ubiquinone?

Two forms of CoQ10. Ubiquinol: ready to use. Ubiquinone: the older form, your body changes it first.
Nature's Bounty uses ubiquinone, the older form.

Form

What it is

CoQ10 comes in two forms. Ubiquinol is the ready-to-use form. It's the form your blood already carries.

Ubiquinone is the older form. Your body has to change it into ubiquinol first.

Why it matters

Nature's Bounty Co Q-10 holds ubiquinone. So do many popular drugstore bottles.

The front of the bottle doesn't say which form is inside. You have to read the back label to know.

If you pick a CoQ10 to take every day, pick the form your blood already carries.

On the label

Find the CoQ10 line in the Supplement Facts box. It may start with Coenzyme Q10, or with Ubiquinol.

The word ubiquinol meets this check. Ubiquinone, or no form named at all, means the older form.

Many ubiquinol labels also name Kaneka, the Japanese company that made the first ubiquinol.

Check 2 of 5 · Dose

The number on its label, and what it counts

Dose

What it is

The dose is how much CoQ10 you get. It's written in mg, short for milligrams.

On Nature's Bounty, that number is the amount in one softgel. It isn't the whole bottle.

Why it matters

This check asks for 200 mg or more in one softgel. Then one softgel a day gets you there.

200 mg a day is the amount used in many CoQ10 studies. That includes studies of people on a statin.

Nature's Bounty meets this check. Two other bottles on this page meet it too: Nature Made and Qunol Ultra 200 mg.

Sports Research, the fourth bottle, holds 100 mg in each softgel. Two of them add up to the same amount, but this check is about getting it all in one. One a day is easier to keep up.

On the label

Read Serving size first. If it says 1 softgel, read the mg on the CoQ10 line.

If it says 2 softgels, one softgel holds half of that number.

Check 3 of 5 · Carrier

What Nature's Bounty dissolves its CoQ10 in

Carrier

What it is

CoQ10 is a lot like butter. It dissolves in fat, not in water.

So a good softgel holds the CoQ10 dissolved in an oil. That oil is called the carrier.

Why it matters

In head-to-head studies, the dry powder capsule came last. CoQ10 in oil came first.

Researchers once compared seven bottles with the same dose on the label. The best got four times more into the blood than the worst.

What made the difference was the formula: the oil and what else sits in the softgel. The number on the front was the same.

Nature's Bounty uses rice bran oil, an oil made from the outer layer of rice grains. It carries the CoQ10, which is good.

It just isn't olive oil, the simple kitchen oil you already know. Only olive oil gets the ✓. Any other named oil gets the ! mark, which means close, but not quite.

On the label

Find the first ingredient under Other ingredients. On Nature's Bounty, it's rice bran oil.

Olive oil meets this check. Soybean oil is a miss, and so is no oil at all.

MCT oil, a refined oil, is a miss too when it's made from palm oil.

Check 4 of 5 · GG

GG, the line Nature's Bounty doesn't have

Diagram: one line in your body leads to CoQ10 and to GG. A statin slows the line, so both drop. Regular CoQ10 puts back only CoQ10. EQ10 puts back CoQ10, as 200 mg of ubiquinol, and 60 mg of GG.
A statin slows both. Most CoQ10 puts back one.

GG

What it is

GG is short for geranylgeraniol. It's a building block your body makes on the same pathway as CoQ10.

A pathway is a chain of steps inside your cells. GG comes from the same pathway, the branch that isn't CoQ10.

Why it matters

A statin is a pill people often take every day, for years. It does its job on cholesterol.

A statin turns that whole pathway down. CoQ10 is one of the things made on it, and GG is another.

Most CoQ10 bottles only put CoQ10 back. EQ10 adds GG back too.

The idea: refill and restart, not just refill. In other words, put back both CoQ10 and GG, not only CoQ10.

EQ10 is made to take alongside a statin. You keep taking your statin as usual.

On the label

Look right under the CoQ10 line. GG gets a line of its own, with an amount next to it.

Nature's Bounty has no GG line. On this page, EQ10 is the one bottle that has it.

Check 5 of 5 · Clean label

Soy lecithin and titanium dioxide: the rest of the label

Words you don't want on the back label: palm oil, soybean oil, polysorbate 80, soy lecithin, added vitamin E and titanium dioxide, and nothing bioengineered.
Two of these words are on the Nature's Bounty label.

Clean label

What it is

Under the Supplement Facts box is a line called Other ingredients. It lists the shell, the oil and anything added to help the factory.

Gelatin, glycerin and water are fine. They're what a softgel shell is made of.

Why it matters

You'll take this every day, maybe for years. So a short list, where each part has a reason to be there, is the one to want.

A clean label has no palm oil and no soybean oil. No polysorbate 80, a man-made additive that helps oil and water mix.

No soy lecithin, a soy-based additive. No titanium dioxide, a white coloring. And nothing bioengineered, the word US labels use for genetically modified.

No added vitamin E either. That's vitamin E with its own line and a % Daily Value, the share of a day's need in one softgel. A CoQ10 doesn't need a vitamin dose on top.

Some extras aren't on this list, like sunflower lecithin or caramel. A softgel doesn't need them either, so they get the ! mark, which means close, but not quite.

On the label

Read the whole Other ingredients line. If none of those words is on it, the bottle gets a ✓.

Nature's Bounty lists rice bran oil, gelatin and vegetable glycerin. In small amounts, it also lists soy lecithin and titanium dioxide.

Both of those are on the list above. So this check is a miss.

Side by side

Nature's Bounty next to three others and EQ10

Here are all five bottles side by side, read from their back labels. EQ10 comes first, in the amber column. Each column head shows how many of the five checks that bottle meets.

The other three are bottles people often compare with it: Qunol Ultra 200 mg, Sports Research and Nature Made. Each of the four meets one check.

Three of them meet the Dose check. Sports Research meets the Clean label check. Bottles that meet the same number of checks are in no particular order.

Olive oil, and a short list

Olive oil comes first under Other ingredients. It's the carrier, the oil the CoQ10 is dissolved in.

Then gelatin, glycerin and purified water for the shell. And ascorbyl palmitate, a form of vitamin C that keeps the oil fresh. Here is what it leaves out.

  • No soy lecithin
  • No titanium dioxide
  • Nothing bioengineered

You take one small softgel a day, in the morning with food. Blood levels take about two weeks to settle. It's made to take every day, for months, not days.

If you take a statin, EQ10 is made to take alongside it. You keep taking your statin as usual.

Answers

Nature's Bounty CoQ10, answered

Is Nature's Bounty CoQ10 ubiquinol or ubiquinone?

It's ubiquinone, the older form your body has to change first. Ubiquinol is the ready-to-use form, the one your blood already carries.

What are the ingredients in Nature's Bounty CoQ10?

Besides the CoQ10, the list is rice bran oil, gelatin and vegetable glycerin.

In small amounts, it also has soy lecithin, a soy-based additive, and titanium dioxide, a white coloring. The label says it contains soy.

Is Nature's Bounty CoQ10 vegan?

No. The softgel shell is made with gelatin, which comes from animals.

Is Nature's Bounty CoQ10 good?

It gets the dose right, with 200 mg in one softgel. On the other four checks, it misses or comes close.

It's the older form, in rice bran oil. It has soy lecithin and titanium dioxide. And it has no GG, the building block a statin also blocks.

Is the Nature's Bounty dose the same as EQ10's?

The number is the same, 200 mg in one softgel. The form and the oil are not. EQ10 is Kaneka ubiquinol in olive oil, with GG added.

In short

Nature's Bounty and EQ10, in short

Nature's Bounty meets one check, the dose. The other three bottles here meet one check each too.

The dose is just one check. EQ10 met all five:

  • Form: ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form
  • Dose: 200 mg in one softgel
  • Carrier: olive oil
  • GG: 60 mg, the building block a statin also blocks
  • Clean label: a short list, with none of the words from check 5
