Nature Made · the USP seal
Is Nature Made CoQ10 Good? What Its USP Seal Checks, and What It Doesn't
It gets the dose right and carries the USP seal. The seal doesn't check the form, the oil or GG, and all three miss.

Nature Made is a name many people trust. You've probably seen it at the pharmacy, on the shelf with the vitamins.
Nature Made says pharmacists recommend its CoQ10 more than any other brand. And its bottle carries the USP Verified seal, a mark from an outside group.
So is Nature Made CoQ10 good? It does some things well. It carries that seal, and it has 200 mg in one softgel.
But the back label shows three things the seal doesn't cover.
It holds the older form of CoQ10. It's in soybean oil. And it has no GG, a building block a statin also blocks.
First, what CoQ10 is. CoQ10, short for coenzyme Q10, is something your own body makes. Your cells use it to turn food into energy.
CoQ10 levels drop with age*. A statin, the daily pill many people take for cholesterol, lowers blood CoQ10 too. That is why so many people pick up a bottle.
This page reads the Nature Made label with you, line by line. Then it puts it next to four other bottles. One is EQ10, a CoQ10 made for people on a statin.
The seal and the label
What the seal covers, and the five checks it doesn't
The USP Verified seal comes from USP, an outside group that tests supplements. It checks that the bottle holds what the label says.
That's worth having. But the seal doesn't say which form of CoQ10 is inside, what oil it's in, or whether it has GG.
You'll find those in the Supplement Facts box, and in the Other ingredients line under it. This page reads five lines there, called the five checks, one at a time.
Check 1 of 5 · Form
Nature Made holds ubiquinone, the older form

Form
CoQ10 comes in two forms. Ubiquinol is the ready-to-use form. It's the form your blood already carries.
Ubiquinone is the older form. Your body has to change it into ubiquinol first.
The Nature Made bottle read here holds ubiquinone. The seal checks that the amount is right. It doesn't check which form the amount is in.
The front of most bottles doesn't say which form is inside either. If you take CoQ10 every day, pick the form your blood already carries.
In the Supplement Facts box, find the line that starts with Coenzyme Q10, or with Ubiquinol. Read the word right after it.
Ubiquinol meets this check. Ubiquinone, or no form named at all, is the older form. Many ubiquinol labels also name Kaneka, the Japanese company that made the first ubiquinol.
Check 2 of 5 · Dose
200 mg in one Nature Made softgel
Dose
The dose is how much CoQ10 sits in one softgel, a soft capsule filled with oil. It's written in mg, short for milligrams.
That number is for one softgel, not for the whole bottle.
This check asks for 200 mg or more in one softgel. That's the amount used in many CoQ10 studies, including studies of people on a statin.
Nature Made puts 200 mg in each softgel. That meets this check, so one softgel a day gets you there.
Some bottles hold 100 mg in each softgel. With those, you'd take two a day to get the same amount.
Two smaller softgels do add up. This check is about getting it in one softgel. One a day is easier to keep up, next to your other pills.
The dose is also the part the USP seal does check. It confirms the amount on the label is really in the softgel.
Find Serving size near the top of the box. If it says 1 softgel, read the mg on the Coenzyme Q10 line.
If the serving size says 2 softgels, halve the number. That gives you the amount in one.
Check 3 of 5 · Carrier
Soybean oil is the first ingredient

Carrier
CoQ10 is a lot like butter. It dissolves in fat, not in water.
So a good softgel holds the CoQ10 already dissolved in an oil. That oil is called the carrier.
In head-to-head studies, a capsule of dry powder, with no oil, came last. CoQ10 in oil came first.
Nature Made uses an oil, which helps. The first ingredient on its list is soybean oil.
Soybean oil misses this check. It's also on the list in the Clean label check. The full check goes to olive oil, the plain kitchen oil many people prefer over seed oils.
Read the first oil under Other ingredients. Olive oil meets this check.
Another named oil, like sunflower or chia seed oil, still carries the CoQ10, so it's close but not quite. Soybean oil, palm oil or no oil at all misses it.
Check 4 of 5 · GG
GG, what a statin blocks besides CoQ10

GG
GG is short for geranylgeraniol. It's a building block your body makes on the same pathway as CoQ10.
A pathway is a chain of steps inside your cells. GG is made on the branch of it that isn't CoQ10.
A statin works on the same pathway your body uses to make CoQ10. It turns that whole pathway down. CoQ10 is one of the things made on it.
Blood CoQ10 goes down on a statin. That has been measured. And since GG sits on that same pathway, a statin also blocks GG.
Most CoQ10 bottles only put CoQ10 back. EQ10 adds GG back too. The idea: refill and restart, not just refill.
In other words: put back both CoQ10 and GG, not only CoQ10.
Look right under the CoQ10 line in the Supplement Facts box. GG gets a line of its own, as geranylgeraniol or GG, with an amount next to it.
No line means no GG. The Nature Made label has no such line. No seal will point that out for you.
Check 5 of 5 · Clean label
A short list, with soybean oil at the top
Clean label
Under the Supplement Facts box is a line most people skip. It starts with Other ingredients.
It lists everything else in the softgel: the shell, the oil, and anything added along the way.
You may take this every day for years. So a short list, where each part has a reason to be there, is the one to want.
A clean label has no palm oil and no soybean oil. A softgel you take every day doesn't need either one.
It has no polysorbate 80, a man-made additive that helps oil and water mix. And no soy lecithin, a soy-based additive.
It should also have no added vitamin E. That's vitamin E with its own line in the Supplement Facts box. A CoQ10 doesn't need an extra vitamin on top.
Last, no titanium dioxide, a white coloring. And nothing bioengineered, the word US labels use for genetically modified.
Some additives aren't on this list, but a CoQ10 doesn't need them either. A little vitamin E from soy, used to keep the oil fresh, is one. Those count as close, but not quite.
The Nature Made list is short: soybean oil, gelatin, glycerin, water and rapeseed lecithin. Gelatin, glycerin and water make the softgel shell.
Rapeseed lecithin is an additive made from rapeseed that helps things mix. It isn't on the list, but a softgel doesn't need it either.
Soybean oil is on the list, and that's the miss here.

Nature Made next to four other bottles
Here are five bottles, each read from its own back label. They are EQ10, Garden of Life, Qunol Ultra 200 mg, Kirkland and Nature Made.
EQ10 comes first, in the amber column. Each column head shows how many of the five checks that bottle meets. The four others each meet one check.
Price has a row too, in words, but it doesn't count toward the checks.

What each label says, in plain words
EQ10 Active CoQ10 · Statin Support5/5 checks metEQ10 meets all five checks. Like Nature Made, it has 200 mg in one softgel. The difference is the rest: Kaneka ubiquinol, olive oil, and GG, the building block a statin also blocks.
Garden of Life Raw CoQ10 200 mg1/5 checks metGarden of Life Raw holds 200 mg in one vegan capsule, with chia seed oil in place of olive oil. It holds ubiquinone, the older form, plus a little vitamin E from soy to keep the oil fresh. There's no GG.
Qunol Ultra CoQ10 200 mg1/5 checks metThis is Qunol Ultra in its bigger size, with 200 mg in one softgel. It holds ubiquinone, the older form, in MCT oil, a refined oil made from palm oil. The label also adds polysorbate 80 and vitamin E.
Kirkland Signature CoQ10 300 mg1/5 checks metKirkland puts more CoQ10 in one softgel, and it carries the same USP Verified seal. It's ubiquinone too, in soybean oil, with no GG. It also costs the least for each milligram.
Nature Made CoQ10 200 mg1/5 checks metIt carries the USP Verified seal, with 200 mg in one softgel. It holds ubiquinone, the older form, and soybean oil is the first ingredient. There's no GG.
Inside EQ10
The same 200 mg as Nature Made, and a different label after that
Nature Made and EQ10 both have 200 mg in one softgel. After that line, the two labels are different.

Other ingredients: olive oil, the fat-soluble carrier; gelatin; glycerin; purified water; ascorbyl palmitate, an antioxidant.
Ubiquinol in place of ubiquinone
The first line is ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form. Nature Made holds ubiquinone, the older form your body has to change first.
EQ10's ubiquinol is made by Kaneka, the Japanese company that made the first ubiquinol.
GG, 60 mg
The second line is GG, short for geranylgeraniol. It's the building block a statin also blocks. There's no GG line on the Nature Made label.
EQ10 adds it back. The idea: refill and restart, not just refill.
Olive oil in place of soybean oil
Then come the other ingredients. Olive oil is first. It's the carrier, the oil the CoQ10 is dissolved in.
After it come gelatin, glycerin and purified water for the shell. Then ascorbyl palmitate, a form of vitamin C that keeps the oil fresh. Nothing else is on the label.
You take one small softgel a day, in the morning with food. If you take a statin, EQ10 is made to take next to it, not in place of it.
Asked often
Nature Made CoQ10, answered
Is Nature Made CoQ10 ubiquinol?
No. The Nature Made CoQ10 read here holds ubiquinone, the older form your body has to change first. The USP seal checks the amount, not the form.
What does the USP Verified seal mean?
USP is an outside group that tests supplements. Its seal means the bottle holds what the label says.
It doesn't judge the form of CoQ10, the oil or GG.
Is Nature Made CoQ10 water soluble?
CoQ10 itself dissolves in fat, not in water. That's why a softgel holds it in an oil.
The Nature Made softgel uses soybean oil. EQ10 uses olive oil.
Nature Made or Kirkland?
The two labels look alike: ubiquinone in soybean oil, with the USP Verified seal. Each meets one check, the Dose, and neither has GG.
Kirkland puts more CoQ10 in one softgel. It also costs less for each milligram.
Can I take CoQ10 with a statin?
EQ10 is made to take next to your statin, not in place of it. Many people on a statin take CoQ10 and say it helps.
Take EQ10 in the morning, with food. Blood levels take about two weeks to settle. It's made to take every day, for months.
In short
Nature Made and EQ10, in short
