Life Extension CoQ10 review
Is Life Extension CoQ10 Good? What Its Ubiquinol Label Shows
It holds Kaneka ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form. It misses on the oil, and on GG, which a statin also blocks.

Is Life Extension CoQ10 good? On the form of CoQ10, yes. Its Super Ubiquinol holds Kaneka ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form.
It falls short in two places. It's dissolved in sunflower oil, not olive oil. And it has no GG, a building block a statin also blocks.
People who look at Life Extension have often read up a little first. They know the word ubiquinol. Some know to look for Kaneka, the Japanese company that made the first ubiquinol.
For everyone else, a short start. CoQ10, short for coenzyme Q10, is something your own body makes. Your cells use it to turn food into energy.
CoQ10 levels drop with age*. Blood CoQ10 also goes down on a statin, the daily pill many people take for cholesterol. That has been measured.
Two Life Extension bottles, one formula
Life Extension sells its ubiquinol under the name Super Ubiquinol. It comes in two sizes.
The smaller one holds 100 mg in each softgel. The bigger one holds 200 mg. Apart from that, the two labels list the same things.
Both also hold shilajit, a resin found in mountain rock. It isn't one of the five checks, so this page doesn't score it.
So the form is settled. What's left to read is the dose, the oil, GG and the rest of the list.
This page reads each one. Then it puts both bottles next to two other ubiquinols and EQ10.
EQ10 is a CoQ10 softgel designed to take next to a statin. It holds Kaneka ubiquinol too, with GG added.
Five lines to read
The Life Extension label, one line at a time
Pick up a Life Extension bottle and read its back label. The Supplement Facts box sits there, with the amounts in it. Under the box, a line starts with Other ingredients.
Five lines in that small print decide how good a CoQ10 is. This page calls them the five checks.
- Form: which kind of CoQ10 is in the bottle
- Dose: how much CoQ10 sits in one softgel
- Carrier: what the CoQ10 is dissolved in
- GG: the building block a statin also blocks
- Clean label: what else is inside the softgel
Each one is explained below, with Life Extension as the example. The Carrier and GG checks get the most words, because that's where this bottle slips.
Check 1 of 5 · Form
Form: Life Extension gets this one right
Form
CoQ10 comes in two forms. Ubiquinol is the ready-to-use form. It's the form your blood already carries.
Ubiquinone is the older form of CoQ10. Your body has to change it into ubiquinol first.
Many bottles on the shelf hold ubiquinone, the older form, and the front rarely says so. Life Extension doesn't make you guess. The word ubiquinol is right in the name.
All five bottles here hold Kaneka ubiquinol. So here, the form doesn't set anyone apart. The other four checks do.
In the Supplement Facts box, find the CoQ10 line. It starts with Coenzyme Q10, or with Ubiquinol.
The word ubiquinol on that line meets this check. Life Extension also names Kaneka, the Japanese company that made the first ubiquinol.
Check 2 of 5 · Dose
Dose: which size you pick matters

Dose
The dose is the amount of CoQ10, in mg, short for milligrams. It's how much sits in one softgel, not in the whole bottle.
This check asks for 200 mg or more in one softgel. Then one softgel a day gets you there.
200 mg a day is the amount used in many CoQ10 studies. That includes studies of people on a statin.
The bigger Life Extension bottle meets this check, with 200 mg in each softgel. The smaller one holds 100 mg in each.
With the smaller bottle, you'd take two a day. That adds up to the same amount. It works, but it's one more softgel to remember every day.
Find Serving size at the top of the box. Then read the mg on the CoQ10 line.
If the serving size says 2 softgels, one softgel holds half of the amount printed.
Check 3 of 5 · Carrier
Carrier: sunflower oil, not olive oil
Carrier
CoQ10 is a lot like butter. It dissolves in fat, not in water.
So your body takes it in best with some fat around it. That's why a good CoQ10 is dissolved in an oil. That oil is called the carrier.
Researchers once compared seven bottles, all with the same dose on the label. The best bottle got four times more into the blood than the worst.
What made the difference was the formula: the oil and what else sits in the softgel. So the oil deserves a close look.
Life Extension uses sunflower oil. Any named oil still carries the CoQ10, so it gets the ! mark, partly there. The full mark goes to olive oil, the plain kitchen oil many people prefer over seed oils.
The other two ubiquinols here use MCT oil, a refined oil. The Qunol Mega label says its MCT oil is made from palm oil.
Palm oil is on the Clean label list in check five. So MCT oil made from palm oil is a miss.
Read the first ingredient under Other ingredients. That's the carrier oil.
Olive oil meets this check. Another named oil, like sunflower oil or MCT oil, gets the ! mark. MCT oil made from palm oil, soybean oil or no oil at all is a miss.
Check 4 of 5 · GG
GG: the line no Life Extension bottle has

GG
GG is short for geranylgeraniol. It's a building block your body makes in a pathway, a chain of steps inside your cells.
Your body makes CoQ10 in that same pathway. GG comes from the same pathway, the branch that isn't CoQ10.
If you take a statin, you likely take it every day, often for years. It does its job on your cholesterol.
A statin works on the same pathway your body uses to make CoQ10. It turns that whole pathway down. So blood CoQ10 goes down, and GG is blocked too.
Life Extension puts back CoQ10, in a good form. It doesn't put back GG. No other bottle on this page does either, except EQ10.
EQ10 adds GG back. The idea: refill and restart, not just refill. In other words, put back both CoQ10 and GG, not only CoQ10.
Look just under the CoQ10 line in the Supplement Facts box. GG gets its own line, as geranylgeraniol or GG, with an amount next to it.
No line means no GG. The Life Extension label has no GG line.
Check 5 of 5 · Clean label
Clean label: close, but not quite

Clean label
Under the Supplement Facts box is a line most people skip. It starts with Other ingredients.
It lists everything else in the softgel: the shell, the oil, and anything added to help the factory.
You'll take this every day, maybe for years. So a short list, where each part has a reason to be there, is the one to want.
A clean label has no palm oil and no soybean oil. A softgel you take every day doesn't need either one.
It has no polysorbate 80, a man-made additive that helps oil and water mix. And no soy lecithin, a soy-based additive.
It should also have no added vitamin E, an extra vitamin a CoQ10 softgel doesn't need. And no titanium dioxide, a white coloring.
Last, nothing bioengineered, the word American labels use for genetically modified.
Life Extension lists none of those words. Its list does have sunflower lecithin, an additive made from sunflowers. It also has annatto, a color made from a plant seed.
Sunflower lecithin isn't on the list, but a softgel doesn't need it either. So it gets the ! mark, partly there.
Qunol Mega, on the same page, lists palm oil and polysorbate 80. That's a miss.

Side by side
Five ubiquinol bottles, side by side
Here are both Life Extension bottles next to Jarrow QH-absorb, Qunol Mega and EQ10. All five hold Kaneka ubiquinol, so the other four lines decide it.
EQ10 comes first, in the amber column. The rest follow, best first. Price shows in words, and it isn't one of the five checks.
Bottles that meet the same number of checks stand in no particular order.

Bottle by bottle
What each ubiquinol gets right, and what it misses
EQ10 Active CoQ10 · Statin Support5/5 checks metEQ10 meets all five checks. It holds Kaneka ubiquinol like Life Extension, with 200 mg in one softgel, dissolved in olive oil. It also lists GG, which no other bottle here has.
Life Extension Super Ubiquinol 200 mg2/5 checks metKaneka ubiquinol at 200 mg, the closest match to EQ10 on form and dose. It's dissolved in sunflower oil instead of olive oil, and the list adds sunflower lecithin. It has no GG.
Jarrow QH-absorb 200 mg2/5 checks metJarrow names Kaneka ubiquinol right on the label, with 200 mg in one softgel. It's dissolved in MCT oil, a refined oil, and the list adds caramel color and sunflower lecithin. It has no GG.
Life Extension Super Ubiquinol 100 mg1/5 checks metThe same formula as the bigger Life Extension bottle, with 100 mg in each softgel. So you'd take two a day to match EQ10's dose. Like the bigger bottle, it uses sunflower oil and sunflower lecithin, and it has no GG.
Qunol Mega Ubiquinol 100 mg1/5 checks metIt uses Kaneka ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form. But each softgel holds 100 mg, in MCT oil, a refined oil, made here from palm oil. The list also has polysorbate 80, a man-made additive, and there's no GG.
Inside EQ10
Inside one EQ10 softgel
Life Extension's bigger bottle and EQ10 start the same way. Both hold Kaneka ubiquinol, with 200 mg in one softgel. The difference is in the oil and the GG.
Here is the whole EQ10 label, line by line.
Supplement Facts

† Daily Value not established.
Other ingredients: olive oil, the fat-soluble carrier; gelatin; glycerin; purified water; ascorbyl palmitate, an antioxidant.
Ubiquinol, 200 mg
The first line is ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form of CoQ10, from Kaneka. It's the same kind Life Extension uses. It helps replenish CoQ10 levels*.
GG, 60 mg
The second line is GG, short for geranylgeraniol. It's the building block a statin also blocks. This is the line Life Extension doesn't have.
EQ10 adds it back. The idea: refill and restart, not just refill.
Olive oil instead of sunflower oil
Then come the other ingredients. Olive oil is first. It's the carrier, the oil the CoQ10 is dissolved in.
Gelatin, glycerin and purified water make the softgel shell. Ascorbyl palmitate, a form of vitamin C, keeps the oil fresh. Nothing else is on the label, so there's no lecithin of any kind.
Take one small softgel a day, in the morning with food. It doesn't work overnight.
Blood levels take about two weeks to settle. It's made to take every day, for months, not days.
EQ10 is made to take alongside your statin, not in place of it.
Answers
Life Extension CoQ10, answered
Is Life Extension CoQ10 good?
On the form, yes. It holds Kaneka ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form.
It falls short on the oil, which is sunflower oil, and on GG, which it doesn't have. The bigger bottle meets two checks: the form and the dose.
What's in Life Extension Super Ubiquinol?
Kaneka ubiquinol and shilajit, a resin found in mountain rock. Both are dissolved in sunflower oil.
The softgel is gelatin, glycerin and water. The rest is beeswax, annatto color and sunflower lecithin, an additive made from sunflowers.
Life Extension or Qunol?
Both use Kaneka ubiquinol. Qunol Mega is dissolved in MCT oil made from palm oil, and it lists polysorbate 80.
Life Extension uses sunflower oil and has neither. Neither brand has GG.
Is 100 mg of ubiquinol enough?
One softgel of the smaller bottle holds 100 mg. That's half the amount this page looks for.
200 mg a day is the amount used in many CoQ10 studies. That includes studies of people on a statin.
So with the smaller bottle, you'd need two softgels each day. The bigger bottle gets there with one.
Can I take ubiquinol with a statin?
EQ10 is made to take alongside your statin, not in place of it. Many people on a statin take a CoQ10 as well.
Blood CoQ10 goes down on a statin. A CoQ10 softgel helps replenish CoQ10 levels*.
In short
Life Extension and EQ10, in short
On this page, the bigger Life Extension bottle met two checks, the form and the dose. The smaller one met one. EQ10 met all five.
The five checks work on any CoQ10 label:
- Form: ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form
- Dose: 200 mg or more in one softgel
- Carrier: olive oil
- GG: a line of its own, with an amount
- Clean label: nothing from the list in check five
If you take a statin, look hardest at GG. A statin blocks GG as well as CoQ10.
EQ10 is Kaneka ubiquinol in olive oil, with GG added. It meets all five checks, in one small softgel a day.
