Is Kirkland CoQ10 Good? What the Big Costco Bottle Says on the Back

It gets the dose right: 300 mg in each softgel. The form, the oil and the other ingredients miss, and it has no GG.

Five CoQ10 bottles on one shelf, EQ10 first: EQ10 Active CoQ10 · Statin Support, Doctor's Best CoQ10 100 mg softgels, Nature Made CoQ10 200 mg, Kirkland Signature CoQ10 300 mg and Qunol Ultra CoQ10 100 mg.
EQ10 first, then the four other bottles on this page.
EQ10's label as the example. Kirkland's has the same spots.
The back of the EQ10 bottle, used as an example. Its Supplement Facts box has five numbered spots: the form, the dose, the carrier, GG and the other ingredients.

Kirkland Signature CoQ10 is the big bottle you see at Costco. Kirkland Signature is Costco's own brand.

So is it good? It does two things well. Each softgel holds a big 300 mg of CoQ10.

And the bottle carries the USP Verified seal. That's a mark from an outside group that checks the bottle holds what the label says.

Of the five checks this page reads on the back label, it meets the Dose check. The form of CoQ10, the oil it's dissolved in and the other ingredients all miss.

And like most bottles, it has no GG, a building block a statin also blocks. Each of these words gets its own part below.

First, what CoQ10 is. CoQ10, short for coenzyme Q10, is something your own body makes. Your cells use it to turn food into energy.

CoQ10 levels drop with age*. A statin, the daily pill many people take for cholesterol, lowers blood CoQ10 too. So many people add a CoQ10.

A big, low-cost bottle is an easy one to start with. A low cost is a real plus when you take something every day.

But the price is on the shelf tag. What the softgel holds is on the back label.

This page reads that label with you, line by line. Then it puts Kirkland next to four other bottles, read the same way. One of them is EQ10, a CoQ10 made for people on a statin.

Five lines to read

The five checks, read on the Kirkland label

Hold the Kirkland bottle so you can read its back label. Near the top sits the Supplement Facts box, the small panel with the amounts.

Under it, in smaller type, is a line that starts with Other ingredients. Five lines in those two spots tell you what you're really taking. This page calls them the five checks.

Here they are one at a time, with Kirkland as the example each time.

Check 1 of 5 · Form

Kirkland holds ubiquinone, the older form of CoQ10

Two forms of CoQ10. Ubiquinol: ready to use. Ubiquinone: the older form, your body changes it first.
Ubidecarenone, Kirkland's word, is the older form.

Form

What it is

CoQ10 comes in two forms. Ubiquinol is the ready-to-use form, the one your blood already carries.

Ubiquinone is the older form. Your body has to change it into ubiquinol first.

Why it matters

The Kirkland label doesn't use either of those words. Its ingredient line says Coenzyme Q10, with the word ubidecarenone next to it.

Ubidecarenone is another name for ubiquinone, the older form. So each Kirkland softgel holds the form your body has to change first.

Many big, low-cost bottles are made this way. The front rarely tells you which form is inside.

On the label

Find the line that starts with Coenzyme Q10, or with Ubiquinol. Then read the word that comes with it.

Ubiquinol meets this check. Ubiquinone, ubidecarenone, or no form named at all is the older form.

Check 2 of 5 · Dose

Each softgel holds 300 mg, the biggest number here

Dose

What it is

The dose is how much CoQ10 sits in one softgel, a soft capsule filled with oil. It's written in mg, short for milligrams.

It's usually the biggest thing printed on the front of the bottle.

Why it matters

Kirkland puts 300 mg in each softgel. That's more than any other bottle on this page.

This check asks for 200 mg or more in one softgel. That's the amount used in many CoQ10 studies, including studies of people on a statin.

So Kirkland meets it, with one softgel a day.

Some bottles hold 100 mg in each softgel. With those, you'd take two a day to get the same amount.

Two smaller softgels do add up. This check is about getting it in one softgel. One a day is easier to keep up, next to your other pills.

A bigger number doesn't always mean more in your blood, though. The oil and the rest of the formula matter too. Those are the next checks.

On the label

Find Serving size near the top of the box. If it says 1 softgel, the mg on the CoQ10 line is what one softgel holds.

On the Kirkland label, one softgel holds 300 mg. That meets this check.

Check 3 of 5 · Carrier

Soybean oil comes first on the Kirkland label

A softgel with CoQ10 dissolved in olive oil, marked with a check, next to a capsule of dry powder with no oil, marked with a cross.
An oil helps. Which oil is the next question.

Carrier

What it is

CoQ10 is a lot like butter. It dissolves in fat, not in water.

So a good softgel holds the CoQ10 already dissolved in an oil. That oil is called the carrier.

Why it matters

In head-to-head studies, a capsule of dry powder, with no oil, came last. CoQ10 in oil came first.

Researchers once compared seven CoQ10 bottles, all with the same dose on the label. The best got four times more into the blood than the worst. What made the difference was how each softgel was made, not the number on the front.

Kirkland does use an oil. The first ingredient on its label is soybean oil.

Soybean oil misses this check. It's also on the list in the Clean label check. The full check goes to olive oil, the plain kitchen oil many people prefer over seed oils.

On the label

Read the first oil under Other ingredients. On the Kirkland bottle, soybean oil is the very first word.

Olive oil meets this check. Another named oil, like sunflower oil, still carries the CoQ10, so it's close but not quite. Soybean oil, palm oil or no oil at all misses it.

Check 4 of 5 · GG

GG, the line the Kirkland label doesn't have

GG

What it is

GG is short for geranylgeraniol. It's a building block your body makes on the same pathway as CoQ10.

A pathway is a chain of steps inside your cells. GG is made on the branch of it that isn't CoQ10.

Why it matters

If you take a statin, you take it every day, often for years. A statin works on the same pathway your body uses to make CoQ10.

A statin turns that whole pathway down. CoQ10 is one of the things made on it.

Blood CoQ10 goes down on a statin. That has been measured. And a statin blocks GG too.

Most CoQ10 bottles, Kirkland too, only put CoQ10 back. EQ10 adds GG back as well. The idea: refill and restart, not just refill.

In other words: put back both CoQ10 and GG, not only CoQ10.

On the label

Look right under the CoQ10 line in the Supplement Facts box. GG gets a line of its own, as geranylgeraniol or GG, with an amount next to it.

No line means no GG. The Kirkland label has no such line, and neither do the three other big names next to it here.

Check 5 of 5 · Clean label

What else is in the Kirkland softgel

Words you don't want on the back label: palm oil, soybean oil, polysorbate 80, soy lecithin, added vitamin E and titanium dioxide, and nothing bioengineered.
Two of these words are on the Kirkland label.

Clean label

What it is

Under the Supplement Facts box is a line most people skip. It starts with Other ingredients.

It lists everything else in the softgel: the shell, the oil, and anything added along the way.

Why it matters

A CoQ10 is something you may take every day for years. So a short list, where each part has a reason to be there, is the one to want.

A clean label has no palm oil and no soybean oil. A softgel you take every day doesn't need either one.

It has no polysorbate 80, a man-made additive that helps oil and water mix. And no soy lecithin, a soy-based additive.

It should also have no added vitamin E. That's vitamin E with its own line in the Supplement Facts box. A CoQ10 softgel doesn't need an extra vitamin on top.

Last, no titanium dioxide, a white coloring. And nothing bioengineered, the word US labels use for genetically modified.

On the label

Read the whole Other ingredients line. The Kirkland list is short, and gelatin and glycerin are fine, because they make the shell.

Two items on it are on the list. They are soybean oil and soy lecithin, a soy-based additive.

Side by side

Kirkland next to four other bottles

Here are five bottles side by side, each read from its own back label. They are EQ10, Doctor's Best, Nature Made, Kirkland and Qunol Ultra 100 mg.

EQ10 comes first, in the amber column. Each column head shows how many of the five checks that bottle meets. Price has a row too, in words, but it doesn't count toward that.

Give your bottle one mark for each yes.

The Kirkland bottle gets one mark, for the Dose check. The front of the bottle doesn't show the other four. It takes the back label to see them.

Inside EQ10

EQ10's label, next to Kirkland's

EQ10 has less CoQ10 in one softgel than Kirkland, and it still meets the Dose check. The rest of its label is different. Here it is, one line at a time.

Supplement Facts

Serving size: 1 softgel

Amount per serving% Daily Value

Ubiquinol CoQ10, Kaneka®200 mg  †

Other ingredients: olive oil, the fat-soluble carrier; gelatin; glycerin; purified water; ascorbyl palmitate, an antioxidant.

EQ10's Supplement Facts box, line by line.

Ubiquinol, 200 mg

The first line is ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form. The Kirkland softgel holds ubiquinone, the older form your body has to change first.

EQ10's ubiquinol is made by Kaneka, the Japanese company that made the first ubiquinol. It helps replenish CoQ10 levels*.

GG, 60 mg

The second line is GG, short for geranylgeraniol. It's the building block a statin also blocks. The Kirkland label has no line like it.

EQ10 adds it back. The idea: refill and restart, not just refill.

Olive oil where Kirkland has soybean oil

Then come the other ingredients. Olive oil is first. It's the carrier, the oil the CoQ10 is dissolved in.

After it come gelatin, glycerin and purified water for the shell. Then ascorbyl palmitate, a form of vitamin C that keeps the oil fresh. There is no soybean oil and no soy lecithin.

You take one small softgel a day, in the morning with food. If you take a statin, EQ10 is made to take next to it, not in place of it.

Asked often

Kirkland CoQ10, answered

Is Kirkland CoQ10 good quality?

It carries the USP Verified seal. That's a mark from an outside group that checks the bottle holds what the label says.

The seal doesn't look at the form of CoQ10, the oil or GG. For those, read the back label.

Is Kirkland CoQ10 ubiquinol or ubiquinone?

Ubiquinone, the older form your body has to change first. The label calls it ubidecarenone, another name for the same thing.

Kirkland or Nature Made: which is better?

They're close. Both hold ubiquinone in soybean oil, and both carry the USP Verified seal. Each meets one check, the Dose, and neither has GG.

Kirkland has more CoQ10 in one softgel. It also lists soy lecithin, a soy-based additive. And it costs less for each milligram.

Kirkland or Qunol?

Kirkland and Qunol Ultra 100 mg both hold ubiquinone, the older form. Neither has GG.

Kirkland meets the Dose check, with 300 mg in one softgel. The smaller Qunol Ultra doesn't.

Kirkland's oil is soybean oil. Qunol Ultra uses MCT oil made from palm oil, with polysorbate 80.

Can I take CoQ10 with my statin?

EQ10 is made to take next to your statin, not in place of it. Many people on a statin take CoQ10 and say it helps.

Take EQ10 in the morning, with food. Blood levels take about two weeks to settle. It's made to take every day, for months.

In short

Kirkland and EQ10, in short

On this page, Kirkland met one check, the Dose. So did Doctor's Best and Nature Made.

If you take a statin, it's a pill you take every day. The CoQ10 next to it should be one you've read.
