Doctor's Best CoQ10 review
Doctor's Best CoQ10 Review: Four Bottles, Four Different Formulas
Doctor's Best Ubiquinol comes out best of the four. None has GG, a building block a statin also blocks.

Is Doctor's Best CoQ10 good? It depends on which Doctor's Best bottle is in your hand.
Doctor's Best sells four CoQ10 bottles. The one that comes out best is Doctor's Best Ubiquinol. But none of the four has GG, a building block a statin also blocks.
First, a little background. CoQ10, short for coenzyme Q10, is something your own body makes. Your cells use it to turn food into energy.
CoQ10 levels drop with age*. Blood CoQ10 also goes down on a statin, the daily pill many people take for cholesterol. That has been measured.
So a lot of people add a CoQ10 bottle. Doctor's Best is one of the names they find, on Amazon and on its own website.
One logo, four different formulas
The four Doctor's Best bottles carry the same name and the same logo. So they look like one product in four sizes.
They're not. Inside, they are four different formulas.
- The 100 mg softgels hold the older form of CoQ10, dissolved in extra virgin olive oil.
- The 200 mg veggie caps hold the older form as a dry powder, in a capsule with no oil.
- The 200 mg veggie softgels hold the older form, dissolved in sunflower oil.
- Doctor's Best Ubiquinol holds ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form, in olive oil with a little MCT oil.
Veggie means the shell of the capsule or softgel is made from plants, not gelatin.
The front shows none of this. It's printed on the back, in the Supplement Facts box, the panel with the amounts.
This page reads that box one line at a time. Then it puts all four next to EQ10.
EQ10 is a CoQ10 softgel designed to take next to a statin. It has GG added.
Five lines to read
Five lines to read on a Doctor's Best label
Pick up any Doctor's Best bottle and look at the back label. Near the top sits the Supplement Facts box. Right under it is a line that starts with Other ingredients.
Five lines in that small print decide how good a CoQ10 is. This page calls them the five checks.
- Form: which kind of CoQ10 is in the bottle
- Dose: how much CoQ10 sits in one softgel
- Carrier: what the CoQ10 is dissolved in
- GG: the building block a statin also blocks
- Clean label: what else is inside the softgel
Each one gets its own part below, with the four Doctor's Best bottles as examples.
Check 1 of 5 · Form
Which kind of CoQ10 is in the bottle

Form
CoQ10 comes in two forms. Ubiquinol is the ready-to-use form. It's the form your blood already carries.
Ubiquinone is the older form of CoQ10. Your body has to change it into ubiquinol first.
Plenty of bottles on the shelf hold ubiquinone, the older form. The front rarely tells you which form is inside.
Three of the four Doctor's Best bottles hold ubiquinone, the older form. Only the one called Doctor's Best Ubiquinol holds the ready-to-use form.
If you take CoQ10 every day, pick the form your blood already carries.
In the Supplement Facts box, find the CoQ10 line. It starts with Coenzyme Q10, or with Ubiquinol.
The word ubiquinol on that line meets this check. Ubiquinone, or no form named at all, means the older form.
A ubiquinol label often names Kaneka, the Japanese company that made the first ubiquinol. The Doctor's Best Ubiquinol label does.
Check 2 of 5 · Dose
How much CoQ10 sits in one softgel
Dose
The dose is the amount of CoQ10, in mg, short for milligrams. It's usually the biggest number on the front.
That number is how much sits in one softgel or capsule. It isn't the whole bottle.
This check asks for 200 mg or more in one softgel. Then one softgel a day gets you there.
200 mg a day is the amount used in many CoQ10 studies. That includes studies of people on a statin.
The Doctor's Best 100 mg softgels hold half of that. With those, you'd take two a day. That adds up to the same amount.
But this check is about getting it in one softgel. One a day is easier to keep up, next to your other pills.
The other three Doctor's Best bottles hold 200 mg in each one. So one a day meets the Dose check.
Find Serving size at the top of the Supplement Facts box. If it says 1 softgel, read the mg on the CoQ10 line.
If the serving size says 2 softgels, one softgel holds half of the amount printed.
Check 3 of 5 · Carrier
What the CoQ10 is dissolved in

Carrier
CoQ10 is a lot like butter. It dissolves in fat, not in water.
So your body takes it in best with some fat around it. That's why a good CoQ10 is dissolved in an oil. That oil is called the carrier.
In head-to-head studies, the dry powder capsule came last. CoQ10 in oil came first.
This is where the four Doctor's Best bottles differ most. The 100 mg softgels use extra virgin olive oil. The ubiquinol bottle does too, with a little MCT oil added.
MCT oil is a refined oil. Here it's only a small part next to the olive oil.
The veggie softgels, with a plant-based shell, use sunflower oil. The veggie caps hold a dry powder made with rice, with no oil at all.
Read the first ingredient under Other ingredients. On a softgel, that's usually the carrier oil.
Olive oil meets this check. It's the plain kitchen oil many people prefer over seed oils.
Another named oil, like sunflower oil, still carries the CoQ10. So it gets the ! mark, partly there. Rice powder, or no oil at all, is a miss.
Check 4 of 5 · GG
GG, the building block a statin also blocks

GG
GG is short for geranylgeraniol. It's a building block your body makes in a pathway, a chain of steps inside your cells.
Your body makes CoQ10 in that same pathway. GG comes from the same pathway, the branch that isn't CoQ10.
A statin works on the same pathway your body uses to make CoQ10. It turns that whole pathway down. CoQ10 is one of the things made on it.
So a statin also blocks GG. Most CoQ10 bottles only put CoQ10 back.
EQ10 adds GG back too. The idea: refill and restart, not just refill. In other words, put back both CoQ10 and GG, not only CoQ10.
None of the four Doctor's Best bottles lists GG. For someone on a statin, this is the check that sets bottles apart.
Look just under the CoQ10 line in the Supplement Facts box. GG gets a line of its own, as geranylgeraniol or GG, with an amount next to it.
No line means no GG. You won't find that line on a Doctor's Best label.
Check 5 of 5 · Clean label
What else is inside the softgel
Clean label
Under the Supplement Facts box is a line most people skip. It starts with Other ingredients.
It lists everything else in the softgel: the shell, the oil, and anything added to help the factory.
You'll take this every day, maybe for years. So a short list, where each part has a reason to be there, is the one to want.
A clean label has no palm oil and no soybean oil. A softgel you take every day doesn't need either one.
It has no polysorbate 80, a man-made additive that helps oil and water mix. And no soy lecithin, a soy-based additive.
It should also have no added vitamin E, an extra vitamin a CoQ10 softgel doesn't need. And no titanium dioxide, a white coloring.
Last, nothing bioengineered, the word American labels use for genetically modified.
Read the whole Other ingredients line. If none of the items above is on it, the bottle meets this check.
The Doctor's Best 100 mg softgels list soy lecithin. That's a miss.
The ubiquinol bottle and the veggie softgels list sunflower lecithin, an additive made from sunflowers. It isn't on the list, but a softgel doesn't need it either. So it gets the ! mark, partly there.
The veggie caps list none of them.

Here are the four Doctor's Best bottles next to EQ10, read from their back labels. EQ10 comes first, in the amber column.
Price shows up too, in words. It isn't one of the five checks.
Bottles that meet the same number of checks stand in no particular order.

EQ10 Active CoQ10 · Statin Support5/5 checks metEQ10 meets all five checks. It holds 200 mg of Kaneka ubiquinol in one softgel, dissolved in olive oil. It also has GG, the building block a statin also blocks, which no Doctor's Best bottle lists.

Inside EQ10
Inside one EQ10 softgel
The Doctor's Best Ubiquinol gets the form, the dose and the oil right. EQ10 keeps all three. Then it adds the one line no Doctor's Best bottle has.
Here is the whole EQ10 label, line by line.
Supplement Facts
Serving size: 1 softgel
Amount per serving% Daily Value
Ubiquinol CoQ10, Kaneka®200 mg †
Trans-geranylgeraniol, GG60 mg †
† Daily Value not established.
Other ingredients: olive oil, the fat-soluble carrier; gelatin; glycerin; purified water; ascorbyl palmitate, an antioxidant.
Ubiquinol, 200 mg
The first line is ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form of CoQ10. It comes from Kaneka, the Japanese company that made the first ubiquinol. It helps replenish CoQ10 levels*.
GG, 60 mg
The second line is GG, short for geranylgeraniol. It's the building block a statin also blocks.
A statin turns down the pathway that makes both CoQ10 and GG. EQ10 puts both back. The idea: refill and restart, not just refill.
Olive oil, the carrier
Under that come the other ingredients. Olive oil is first. It's the carrier, the oil the CoQ10 is dissolved in, so it comes with the fat it needs.
Gelatin, glycerin and purified water make the softgel shell. Ascorbyl palmitate, a form of vitamin C, keeps the oil fresh. Nothing else is on the label.
So there's no lecithin of any kind, and no palm oil.
You take one small softgel a day, in the morning with food. Blood levels take about two weeks to settle. It's made to take every day, for months, not days.
EQ10 is made to take alongside your statin, not in place of it.
Answers
Doctor's Best CoQ10, answered
Is Doctor's Best CoQ10 good?
It depends on the bottle. Doctor's Best Ubiquinol does best of the four. It meets three of the checks: the form, the dose and the oil.
The other three hold ubiquinone, the older form. None of the four has GG, the building block a statin also blocks.
Is Doctor's Best CoQ10 third party tested?
Three Doctor's Best bottles carry the USP Verified seal. That's a mark from an outside group that checks the bottle holds what the label says.
They are the 100 mg softgels, the veggie caps and the veggie softgels. The ubiquinol bottle shows no seal on its product page.
Doctor's Best CoQ10 or Doctor's Best Ubiquinol?
The plain Doctor's Best CoQ10 holds ubiquinone, the older form your body has to change first. Doctor's Best Ubiquinol holds Kaneka ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form.
So the ubiquinol bottle does better on this page. It still has no GG.
What is the BioPerine in Doctor's Best CoQ10?
BioPerine is an extract of black pepper. Doctor's Best adds a little to its three plain CoQ10 bottles. It isn't one of the five checks.
Can I take CoQ10 with my statin?
EQ10 is made to take alongside your statin, not in place of it. Many people on a statin take a CoQ10 as well.
Blood CoQ10 goes down on a statin. A CoQ10 softgel helps replenish CoQ10 levels*.
In short
Doctor's Best and EQ10, in short
On this page, the best Doctor's Best bottle met three checks. None of the four had GG. EQ10 met all five.
The five checks work on any CoQ10 label:
- Form: ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form
- Dose: 200 mg or more in one softgel
- Carrier: olive oil
- GG: a line of its own, with an amount
- Clean label: nothing from the list in check five
If you take a statin, that pill comes every day, often for years. The CoQ10 next to it should be one you've read.
EQ10 meets all five checks, in one small softgel a day.
