CoQ10 on a statin

Best CoQ10 for Statin Users: Five Lines to Read on the Label First

A statin lowers blood CoQ10 and blocks a building block called GG. Of the bottles read here, only EQ10 puts both back.

Five CoQ10 bottles on one shelf, EQ10 first: EQ10 Active CoQ10 · Statin Support, Life Extension Super Ubiquinol 100 mg, Doctor's Best CoQ10 100 mg softgels, Nature Made CoQ10 200 mg and Qunol Ultra CoQ10 100 mg.
EQ10 first, then the four other bottles on this page.
A statin slows the line that makes CoQ10 and GG.
Diagram: one line in your body leads to CoQ10 and to GG. A statin slows the line, so both drop. Regular CoQ10 puts back only CoQ10. EQ10 puts back CoQ10, as 200 mg of ubiquinol, and 60 mg of GG.

The best CoQ10 to take with a statin meets five checks on its back label. On a statin, one matters most: GG, a building block a statin also blocks. Of the bottles on this page, only EQ10, a CoQ10 made for people on a statin, lists it.

A statin is the daily pill many people take for cholesterol. You take it every day, often for years. EQ10 is made to take alongside it.

If you take one, a CoQ10 bottle may sit next to it in your cabinet. Maybe a friend told you about it, or your doctor brought it up.

Many people start reading about CoQ10 because of how their muscles feel on a statin. A label can't tell you how you'll feel. It can tell you what's inside the softgel.

CoQ10, short for coenzyme Q10, is something your own body makes. Your cells use it to turn food into energy. Blood CoQ10 goes down on a statin, and that has been measured.

So a CoQ10 bottle makes sense. Picking one is the hard part. Two bottles can look alike on the front and hold very different things.

The back shows what's different: the form of CoQ10, the amount in one softgel, and the oil it sits in. On a statin, there's one more line to read, called GG.

This page reads each line with you. Then it sets four well-known bottles next to EQ10.

Five lines to read

What to read on the back of a CoQ10 bottle

Every CoQ10 bottle has a Supplement Facts box on the back, the panel with the amounts. Under it is a line called Other ingredients.

The five checks sit in those two spots. The picture shows where each one is.

The back of a bottle with a Supplement Facts panel. Numbers show where to look: 1 form, 2 dose, 3 carrier, 4 GG, 5 clean label.
An example label, with the five checks marked.

The five parts below take them one at a time. If you take a statin, the fourth one, GG, is the one to read first.

Check 1 of 5 · Form

Form: ubiquinol or ubiquinone

Two forms of CoQ10. Ubiquinol: ready to use. Ubiquinone: the older form, your body changes it first.
Both are CoQ10. The label names which one.

Form

What it is

CoQ10 comes in two forms. Ubiquinol is the ready-to-use form, the form your blood already carries.

Ubiquinone is the older form. Your body has to change it into ubiquinol first.

Why it matters

Many of the best-known bottles hold ubiquinone. On this page, Qunol Ultra 100 mg, Nature Made and Doctor's Best all do.

The front rarely tells you. Qunol Ultra 100 mg, one of the easiest bottles to find, says Qunol in big letters. Its label never names the form, and that means the older form.

Life Extension holds ubiquinol from Kaneka, the Japanese company that made the first ubiquinol. So does EQ10.

If you take CoQ10 every day next to your statin, pick the form your blood already carries.

On the label

In the Supplement Facts box, find the CoQ10 line. It starts with Coenzyme Q10, or with the word Ubiquinol.

If that line says ubiquinol, it meets this check. Ubiquinone, or no form named at all, is the older form.

Check 2 of 5 · Dose

Dose: how much sits in one softgel

Dose

What it is

The dose is the number in mg, short for milligrams, printed big on the front. It tells you how much CoQ10 is in one softgel.

Why it matters

This check asks for 200 mg or more in one softgel. That's the amount used in many CoQ10 studies, including studies of people on a statin.

The Qunol Ultra, Doctor's Best and Life Extension bottles here hold 100 mg in each softgel. You'd take two a day, and that adds up to the same amount.

This check is about getting it all in one softgel. You already take a statin every day. One small softgel next to it is easier to keep up than two.

On the label

Find Serving size at the top of the box. If it says one softgel, read the mg on the CoQ10 line.

If the serving size says 2 softgels, halve the number. That gives you the amount in one.

Nature Made holds 200 mg in one softgel, so it meets this check.

Check 3 of 5 · Carrier

Carrier: the oil the CoQ10 sits in

A softgel with CoQ10 dissolved in olive oil, marked with a check, next to a capsule of dry powder with no oil, marked with a cross.
CoQ10 dissolves in fat. The oil carries it in.

Carrier

What it is

CoQ10 dissolves in fat, not in water. In that way, it's a lot like butter.

So a good softgel holds the CoQ10 already dissolved in an oil. That oil is called the carrier.

Why it matters

Your body takes CoQ10 in along with fat. In head-to-head studies, a capsule of dry powder, with no oil, came last. CoQ10 in oil came first.

Olive oil is the plain kitchen oil many people prefer, so it gets the check. Doctor's Best uses extra virgin olive oil, and EQ10 uses olive oil too.

Nature Made uses soybean oil. Qunol Ultra 100 mg uses MCT oil, a refined oil, made here from palm oil. Both miss, because soybean oil and palm oil are on the Clean label list in check 5.

Life Extension uses sunflower oil. Any named oil like that still carries the CoQ10, so it's close, but not quite.

Take your CoQ10 in the morning with food. The food adds a little more fat.

On the label

Read the first oil under Other ingredients. Olive oil meets this check.

Sunflower oil or another named oil is close, but not quite. Soybean oil, palm-oil MCT, or a dry powder with no oil misses it.

Check 4 of 5 · GG

GG: the line to read first on a statin

GG

What it is

GG is short for geranylgeraniol. It's a building block your own body makes.

It comes from the same pathway as CoQ10. A pathway is a chain of steps inside your cells. GG is made on the branch that isn't CoQ10.

Why it matters

A statin works on that same pathway. It turns the whole pathway down, and that's how it lowers cholesterol.

CoQ10 is one of the things made on that pathway. So blood CoQ10 goes down on a statin. A statin also blocks GG.

Most CoQ10 bottles only put CoQ10 back. They have no GG. Nobody tells you to look for it, so most people never do.

EQ10 adds GG back, 60 mg in each softgel. The idea: refill and restart, not just refill. In other words, put back both CoQ10 and GG, not only CoQ10.

None of the four other bottles here lists GG. EQ10 is made to take alongside your statin.

On the label

Look right under the CoQ10 line in the Supplement Facts box. GG gets a line of its own, with an amount next to it.

It may say geranylgeraniol, trans-geranylgeraniol or GG. No line means no GG.

Check 5 of 5 · Clean label

Clean label: what else is in the softgel

Clean label

What it is

Under the Supplement Facts box is a line most people skip. It starts with Other ingredients.

It lists everything else in the softgel: the shell, the oil, and anything added to help the factory.

Why it matters

You'll take this next to your statin every day, maybe for years. So a short list, where each part has a reason to be there, is the one to want.

Qunol Ultra 100 mg lists polysorbate 80, a man-made additive that helps oil and water mix. It also lists palm oil, soy lecithin, a soy-based additive, and added vitamin E.

Nature Made lists soybean oil, which is also its carrier.

Doctor's Best lists soy lecithin. Life Extension lists sunflower lecithin, which isn't on the list. A softgel doesn't need it either, so it's close, but not quite.

Gelatin, glycerin and water are fine. They're what a softgel shell is made of.

On the label

Read the whole Other ingredients line. It should have no palm oil, no soybean oil, no polysorbate 80 and no soy lecithin.

It should also have no added vitamin E, an extra vitamin a CoQ10 softgel doesn't need. And no titanium dioxide, a white coloring.

Nothing on it should be bioengineered, the word US labels use for genetically modified.

Bottle by bottle

Where each bottle stands for someone on a statin

  1. EQ10 Active CoQ10 · Statin Support bottle
    EQ10 Active CoQ10 · Statin Support 5/5 checks met

EQ10 meets all five checks. It holds 200 mg of Kaneka ubiquinol in one softgel, in olive oil, with GG added. The GG is why it was made for people on a statin.

  2. Life Extension Super Ubiquinol 100 mg bottle
Life Extension Super Ubiquinol 100 mg 1/5 checks met

It holds Kaneka ubiquinol, the same form as EQ10. Each softgel has 100 mg, so you'd take two a day. It's in sunflower oil, not olive oil, and there's no GG.

  3. Doctor's Best CoQ10 100 mg softgels bottle
    Doctor's Best CoQ10 100 mg softgels 1/5 checks met

Its softgels carry the USP Verified seal, an outside group's check that the bottle holds what the label says. They sit in extra virgin olive oil, but hold ubiquinone, the older form. Each softgel has 100 mg, so you'd take two a day, and there's no GG.

  4. Nature Made CoQ10 200 mg bottle
Nature Made CoQ10 200 mg 1/5 checks met

It carries the USP Verified seal. One softgel holds 200 mg, so it meets the Dose check. But it's ubiquinone, the older form, in soybean oil, and there's no GG.

  5. Qunol Ultra CoQ10 100 mg bottle
Qunol Ultra CoQ10 100 mg 0/5 checks met

It's easy to find, and it's the most-rated bottle here on Amazon. On the back, it holds ubiquinone at 100 mg a softgel, in MCT oil made from palm oil. It has no GG, and it misses all five checks.

Inside EQ10

What's inside EQ10, and why each part is there

EQ10 is a CoQ10 made to take alongside a statin. Here is its Supplement Facts box, line by line.

Supplement Facts

Serving size: 1 softgel

Amount per serving % Daily Value

Ubiquinol CoQ10, Kaneka® 200 mg  †

Trans-geranylgeraniol, GG 60 mg  †

† Daily Value not established.

Other ingredients: olive oil, the fat-soluble carrier; gelatin; glycerin; purified water; ascorbyl palmitate, an antioxidant.

EQ10's Supplement Facts box, line by line.

Ubiquinol from Kaneka, 200 mg

The first line is ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form of CoQ10. Kaneka, the Japanese company that made the first ubiquinol, makes it. It helps replenish CoQ10 levels*.

GG, 60 mg

The second line is GG, short for geranylgeraniol. It's the building block a statin also blocks. EQ10 adds it back.

The idea: refill and restart, not just refill. Most CoQ10 bottles only do the first part.

Olive oil and the softgel shell

The ubiquinol and the GG are dissolved in olive oil, the carrier. Gelatin, glycerin and purified water make the softgel shell.

Ascorbyl palmitate, a form of vitamin C, keeps the oil fresh. Nothing else is on the label. Here's what is not on it:

  • No palm oil
  • No soybean oil
  • No polysorbate 80
  • No soy lecithin
  • Nothing bioengineered

How to take it

Take one small softgel a day, in the morning with food. Blood levels take about two weeks to settle. It's made to take every day, for months, not days.

It doesn't work overnight. Many people on a statin take CoQ10 next to it and say it helps.

Answers

CoQ10 and statins, answered

Can I take CoQ10 with my statin?

Many people on a statin take CoQ10 next to it and say it helps. EQ10 was made for exactly that, to take alongside your statin. Stay on your statin.

Take it in the morning, with food.

What is the best CoQ10 to take with a statin?

Look for one that meets all five checks. That's ubiquinol, 200 mg in one softgel, olive oil, GG and a clean label.

Of the bottles read here, EQ10 is the one that meets them all.

Why does GG matter if I take a statin?

A statin turns down the pathway your body uses to make CoQ10. GG comes from that same pathway, so a statin also blocks it.

A bottle without GG puts only CoQ10 back. EQ10 puts back both.

Will I feel a difference?

Many people on a statin take CoQ10 and say it helps. It doesn't work overnight, though.

Blood levels take about two weeks to settle. It's made to take every day, for months, not days.

How much CoQ10 should I take with a statin?

200 mg a day is the amount used in many CoQ10 studies, including studies of people on a statin.

One EQ10 softgel holds 200 mg. So it's one softgel a day, in the morning with food.

In short

What the labels showed, on a statin

On this page, the four other bottles met one check or none. None of them lists GG. EQ10 met all five.

Here are the five checks once more:

  • Form: ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form
  • Dose: 200 mg or more in one softgel
  • Carrier: dissolved in olive oil
  • GG: its own line, right under the CoQ10
  • Clean label: none of the additives from check 5

If you'd rather not read every label, EQ10 meets all five checks, GG included.
