The CoQ10 dose

Best CoQ10 Dose: Look for 200 mg in One Softgel, Then Read the Back

The dose is one of five checks. The Supplement Facts box on the back shows the other four.

Five CoQ10 bottles on one shelf, EQ10 first: EQ10 Active CoQ10 · Statin Support, NOW Extra Strength Ubiquinol 200 mg, Nature Made CoQ10 200 mg, Kirkland Signature CoQ10 300 mg and Qunol Ultra CoQ10 100 mg.
EQ10 first, then the four other bottles on this page.
Same 200 mg a day: one softgel, or two.
One 200 mg softgel, marked with a check, next to two 100 mg softgels, marked with a cross. Both give 200 mg a day.

The CoQ10 dose to look for is 200 mg in one softgel. That way, one small softgel a day is all you take.

CoQ10, short for coenzyme Q10, is something your own body makes. Your cells use it to turn food into energy. CoQ10 levels drop with age*.

The biggest thing on the front of most CoQ10 bottles is a number. It is the dose, in mg, short for milligrams.

On a pharmacy shelf, one bottle may say 100 mg on the front. The bottle next to it says 200 mg. A big Costco bottle says 300 mg.

A bigger number looks like a better bottle. It isn’t always. The rest is printed in small type on the back: the form, the oil, and what else is inside.

This page walks through the back label with you, one line at a time. Then it sets five bottles side by side, with three different numbers on their fronts.

One of the five is EQ10. It is a CoQ10 made for people who take a statin, the daily pill for cholesterol.

Five lines to read

The dose is one of five checks on the label

Pick up any CoQ10 bottle and read its back label. Near the top sits the Supplement Facts box, the panel with the amounts in it.

The dose is printed in that box. So are four other lines that tell you how good a bottle is. Each one gets its own short part below.

An example Supplement Facts panel. Numbers show where to look: 1 form, 2 dose, 3 carrier, 4 GG, 5 clean label.
An example label, with the five checks marked.

Check 1 of 5 · Form

Form: which kind of CoQ10 is inside

Two forms of CoQ10. Ubiquinol: ready to use. Ubiquinone: the older form, your body changes it first.
Ubiquinol is ready to use. Ubiquinone gets changed first.

Form

What it is

CoQ10 comes in two forms. Ubiquinol is the ready-to-use form. It is the form your blood already carries.

Ubiquinone is the older form. Your body has to change it into ubiquinol first.

Why it matters

This ties straight into the dose. The number on the front tells you how much CoQ10 is in the softgel. It does not tell you which form it is.

Many of the best-known bottles hold ubiquinone, the older form. The front rarely says so. For a softgel you take every day, pick the form your blood already carries.

On the label

In the Supplement Facts box, find the line that starts with Coenzyme Q10, or with Ubiquinol.

If that line says ubiquinol, it meets this check. “As ubiquinone”, or no form named at all, means the older form.

Many ubiquinol labels also name Kaneka, the Japanese company that made the first ubiquinol.

Check 2 of 5 · Dose

Dose: how much is in one softgel

Dose

What it is

The dose is the amount of CoQ10, counted in mg, short for milligrams. On most bottles, the front shows the amount in one softgel.

It is not the whole bottle. And it is not always what you take in a day.

Why it matters

CoQ10 has no official daily amount. So each brand picks its own number for the front, from very small to very large.

Many of the best-known softgels hold 200 mg. This page uses 200 mg a day as the mark to hit.

Some softgels hold 100 mg. With those, it takes two a day to reach the same amount.

A softgel with 200 mg or more gets you there with just one. One a day is easier to keep up, week after week, next to your other pills.

That is why this check asks for the whole amount in one softgel. A smaller softgel misses it, even though two of them reach the same amount.

On the label

Find the words “Serving size” at the top of the box. If it says 1 softgel, read the mg on the CoQ10 line.

If it says 2 softgels, one softgel holds half of that amount. Then 200 mg or more in one softgel meets this check.

Check 3 of 5 · Carrier

Carrier: what the CoQ10 is dissolved in

A softgel with CoQ10 dissolved in olive oil, marked with a check, next to a capsule of dry powder with no oil, marked with a cross.
In olive oil, or as a dry powder.

Carrier

What it is

CoQ10 is a lot like butter. It dissolves in fat, not in water.

So a good softgel holds the CoQ10 already dissolved in an oil. That oil is called the carrier.

Why it matters

Researchers once compared seven bottles with the same dose on the label. The best bottle got four times more into the blood than the worst.

The difference came from how each softgel was made. The number on the front was the same on all seven.

In head-to-head studies, the dry powder capsule came last. CoQ10 in oil came first. Olive oil is the simple, clean one.

On the label

Read the first oil under “Other ingredients”. Olive oil meets this check.

Another named oil, like sunflower oil, is close but not quite. So is MCT oil, an oil processed from coconut or palm.

If the label says the MCT oil is made from palm oil, it misses. Palm oil is on the Clean label list in check 5. Soybean oil, or no oil at all, misses it too.

Any named oil still carries the CoQ10, so it counts as close. The full check goes to olive oil. It is the plain kitchen oil many people prefer over seed oils.

Check 4 of 5 · GG

GG: the building block a statin also blocks

GG

What it is

GG is short for geranylgeraniol. It is a building block your body makes on the same pathway as CoQ10. A pathway is a chain of steps inside your cells.

Why it matters

Many people who take CoQ10 also take a statin, the daily pill for cholesterol. A statin works on the same pathway your body uses to make CoQ10.

A statin turns that whole pathway down. Blood CoQ10 goes down on a statin. That has been measured.

GG comes from the same pathway, the branch that isn’t CoQ10. So a statin also blocks GG, and no amount of CoQ10 puts it back.

Most CoQ10 bottles only put CoQ10 back. EQ10 adds GG back too. The idea: refill and restart, not just refill.

In other words, put back both CoQ10 and GG, not only CoQ10.

On the label

Look just under the CoQ10 line. You want a line of its own that says geranylgeraniol, or GG, with an amount next to it.

No line means no GG. None of the other bottles on this page has one.

Check 5 of 5 · Clean label

Clean label: what else is in the softgel

Clean label

What it is

Under the Supplement Facts box there is a line most people skip. It starts with “Other ingredients”.

It lists everything else in the softgel: the shell, the oil, and anything added to help the factory.

Why it matters

You take a softgel every day, maybe for years. So a short list, where each part has a reason to be there, is the one to want.

Gelatin, glycerin and water are fine. They are what a softgel shell is made of.

On the label

Read the whole “Other ingredients” line. It should have no palm oil and no soybean oil. It should have no polysorbate 80, a man-made additive that helps oil and water mix.

It should have no soy lecithin, a soy-based additive, and no titanium dioxide, a white coloring. Nothing should be bioengineered, the word US labels use for genetically modified.

It should also have no added vitamin E, listed with its own amount in the box. A CoQ10 softgel doesn’t need an extra vitamin on top.

Some other additives are not on this list, like sunflower lecithin or caramel color. A softgel doesn’t need them either, so they count as close, not a full check.

What each number on the front really gets you

  1. EQ10 Active CoQ10 · Statin Support bottle
    EQ10 Active CoQ10 · Statin Support5/5 checks met

EQ10 meets all five checks. One softgel holds 200 mg of Kaneka ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form, in olive oil. It also adds GG, the building block a statin also blocks.

  2. NOW Extra Strength Ubiquinol 200 mg bottle
NOW Extra Strength Ubiquinol 200 mg3/5 checks met

This NOW bottle holds Kaneka ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form, with a short ingredient list. One softgel holds 200 mg, so one a day meets the Dose check. The oil is MCT oil, a refined oil, and there is no GG.

  3. Nature Made CoQ10 200 mg bottle
    Nature Made CoQ10 200 mg1/5 checks met

Nature Made carries the USP Verified seal. It means an outside group checked that the bottle holds what its label says. Each 200 mg softgel holds ubiquinone, the older form, in soybean oil.

  4. Kirkland Signature CoQ10 300 mg bottle
    Kirkland Signature CoQ10 300 mg1/5 checks met

Kirkland, Costco’s own brand, has the biggest number here, and it costs the least for each milligram of CoQ10. But it holds ubiquinone, the older form your body has to change first. It sits in soybean oil, an oil on the Clean label list of things to leave out.

  5. Qunol Ultra CoQ10 100 mg bottle
    Qunol Ultra CoQ10 100 mg0/5 checks met

Qunol Ultra 100 mg is easy to find and widely rated. Each softgel holds ubiquinone, the older form, so you would take two a day. It sits in MCT oil made from palm oil, and the label lists polysorbate 80, a man-made additive.

Inside EQ10

Inside one EQ10 softgel

Here is the whole EQ10 label, line by line. Every amount on it is for one softgel, and one softgel is the whole daily serving.

Supplement Facts

Serving size: 1 softgel

Ubiquinol CoQ10, Kaneka®200 mg  †

Trans-geranylgeraniol, GG60 mg  †

† Daily Value not established.

Other ingredients: olive oil, the fat-soluble carrier; gelatin; glycerin; purified water; ascorbyl palmitate, an antioxidant.

The EQ10 Supplement Facts box: one softgel per serving.

Ubiquinol, 200 mg

The first line is ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form of CoQ10. It is made by Kaneka, the company named in check one.

All 200 mg sit in one softgel. So there is no second softgel to remember later in the day.

GG, 60 mg

The second line is GG, short for geranylgeraniol. It is the building block a statin also blocks.

It sits next to the CoQ10 in the same softgel. So one softgel a day adds back both.

Olive oil, the carrier

Under the amounts come the other ingredients. Olive oil is listed first. It is the carrier, the oil the CoQ10 and the GG are dissolved in.

Then gelatin, glycerin and purified water, which make the softgel shell. Last is ascorbyl palmitate, a form of vitamin C that keeps the oil fresh. Nothing else is on the label.

Take it in the morning, with food. Blood levels take about two weeks to settle. It is made to take every day, for months.

Answers

The CoQ10 dose, answered

What is the best CoQ10 dose?

CoQ10 has no official daily amount. So each bottle picks its own number.

A simple mark is 200 mg a day, in one softgel. Many of the best-known softgels hold that amount.

Then read the rest of the label. The oil and the rest of the formula decide how much reaches your blood.

Is the mg on the front what I take in a day?

Not always. On most bottles, it is the amount in one softgel.

Look at “Serving size” in the Supplement Facts box. It tells you how many softgels make one serving.

Is more than 200 mg better?

Not by itself. The oil and the rest of the formula decide how much reaches your blood. On this page, the biggest number sits on a bottle that meets only one check.

Can I take two smaller softgels instead of one?

Yes. Two of them add up to the same amount in a day.

It just means a second softgel every day. The Dose check asks for the whole amount in one softgel, because one a day is easier to keep up.

When should I take CoQ10?

Take it in the morning, with food. CoQ10 dissolves in fat, so a meal helps.

Blood levels take about two weeks to settle. It is made to take every day, for months.

In short

The numbers, read in full

On this page, the biggest number sat on a bottle that met one check. The best of the other four met three. EQ10 met all five.

These are the five checks, one more time:

  • Form: ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form
  • Dose: 200 mg or more in one softgel
  • Carrier: dissolved in olive oil
  • GG: a line of its own for geranylgeraniol
  • Clean label: none of the words from check 5

The number tells you how much is in one softgel. The other four lines tell you what that number is worth.

If you would rather not read every label, EQ10 already meets all five, in one softgel a day.
