CoQ10 after 50
Best CoQ10 Over 50: How to Pick One for You or a Parent
Look for ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form, with 200 mg in one small softgel, in olive oil, and a short label.

CoQ10, short for coenzyme Q10, is something your own body makes. Your cells use it to turn food into energy. CoQ10 levels drop with age*.
That is why so many people start a CoQ10 in their fifties or sixties. Maybe a friend told you to. Maybe you are buying one for your mother or father.
Many people this age also take a statin, the daily pill for cholesterol. Statins are common after 40. About one in four Americans that age takes one.
Two CoQ10 bottles can look alike on the front and still be very different inside. What is different is printed on the back, in small type.
This page reads that small type with you, one line at a time. Then it sets five popular bottles side by side. One is EQ10, a CoQ10 made for people on a statin.
In short, a good CoQ10 for older adults holds ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form. It has 200 mg in one small softgel, in olive oil. And the rest of the label is short.
Five lines to read
Five checks for a CoQ10 you will take for years
Every CoQ10 bottle has a Supplement Facts box on the back. It is the black-and-white panel with the amounts in it.
If the print is small, use your phone camera to zoom in. Five lines in and under that box tell you almost everything.
Check 1 of 5 · Form
Form: which kind of CoQ10 is inside

Form
CoQ10 comes in two forms. Ubiquinol is the ready-to-use form. It is the form your blood already carries.
Ubiquinone is the older form. Your body has to change it into ubiquinol first.
You may take this softgel every morning for years. So pick the form your blood already carries.
Many of the best-known bottles hold ubiquinone, the older form. The front rarely tells you which form is inside.
In the Supplement Facts box, find the line that starts with Coenzyme Q10, or with Ubiquinol.
If that line says ubiquinol, it meets this check. “As ubiquinone”, or no form named at all, means the older form.
Many ubiquinol labels also name Kaneka, the Japanese company that made the first ubiquinol.
Check 2 of 5 · Dose
Dose: how much is in one softgel

Dose
The dose is the amount of CoQ10, counted in mg, short for milligrams. On most bottles, the mg printed on the front is for one softgel, not for the whole bottle.
CoQ10 has no official daily amount. Many of the best-known softgels hold 200 mg. This page uses 200 mg a day as the mark to hit.
Some softgels hold only 100 mg. With those, it takes two a day to reach the same amount.
This check is about getting it all in one softgel. One a day is easier to keep up, most of all next to other daily pills.
Some CoQ10 softgels are large. A small one helps if pills are hard to swallow.
Find “Serving size” at the top of the box. If it says 1 softgel, read the mg on the CoQ10 line.
If it says 2 softgels, one softgel holds half of that amount. Then 200 mg or more in one softgel meets this check.
Check 3 of 5 · Carrier
Carrier: what the CoQ10 is dissolved in
Carrier
CoQ10 is a lot like butter. It dissolves in fat, not in water.
So a good softgel holds the CoQ10 already dissolved in an oil. That oil is called the carrier.
In head-to-head studies, the dry powder capsule came last. CoQ10 in oil came first.
Not every oil is the same, though. Olive oil is the simple, clean one, the kind many kitchens already have.
Take it in the morning with food. The food adds a little more fat.
Read the first oil under “Other ingredients”. Olive oil meets this check.
Another named oil, like sunflower oil, is close but not quite. So is MCT oil, an oil processed from coconut or palm.
If the label says the MCT oil is made from palm oil, it misses. Palm oil is on the Clean label list in check 5. Soybean oil, or no oil at all, misses it too.
Any named oil still carries the CoQ10, so it counts as close. The full check goes to olive oil.
Check 4 of 5 · GG
GG: the building block a statin also blocks

GG
GG is short for geranylgeraniol. It is a building block your body makes on the same pathway as CoQ10. A pathway is a chain of steps inside your cells.
If you or a parent takes a statin, give this check extra weight. A statin works on the same pathway your body uses to make CoQ10.
A statin turns that whole pathway down. Blood CoQ10 goes down on a statin. That has been measured.
GG comes from the same pathway, the branch that isn’t CoQ10. So a statin also blocks GG.
Most CoQ10 bottles only put CoQ10 back. EQ10 adds GG back too. The idea: refill and restart, not just refill.
In other words, put back both CoQ10 and GG, not only CoQ10.
EQ10 is made to take alongside your statin. You keep taking your statin as before.
Look just under the CoQ10 line. You want a line of its own that says geranylgeraniol, or GG, with an amount next to it.
No line means no GG. None of the other bottles on this page has one.
Check 5 of 5 · Clean label
Clean label: what else is in the softgel
Clean label
Under the Supplement Facts box there is a line most people skip. It starts with “Other ingredients”.
It lists everything else in the softgel: the shell, the oil, and anything added to help the factory.
After 50, many people take a few pills a day. The CoQ10 next to them should have a short list, where each part has a reason to be there.
Gelatin, glycerin and water are fine. They are what a softgel shell is made of.
Read the whole “Other ingredients” line. It should have no palm oil and no soybean oil. It should have no polysorbate 80, a man-made additive that helps oil and water mix.
It should have no soy lecithin, a soy-based additive, and no titanium dioxide, a white coloring. Nothing should be bioengineered, the word US labels use for genetically modified.
It should also have no added vitamin E, listed with its own amount in the box. A CoQ10 softgel doesn’t need an extra vitamin on top.
Some other additives are not on this list, like sunflower lecithin or caramel color. A softgel doesn’t need them either, so they count as close, not a full check.

Bottle by bottle
What each label means for a daily softgel
EQ10 Active CoQ10 · Statin Support5/5 checks metEQ10 meets all five checks. One small softgel holds 200 mg of Kaneka ubiquinol, dissolved in olive oil. It also has GG, which none of the other bottles here lists.
Life Extension Super Ubiquinol 200 mg2/5 checks metLife Extension holds Kaneka ubiquinol at 200 mg, the closest match to EQ10 on form and dose. The oil is sunflower oil, and the label adds sunflower lecithin, an additive made from sunflowers. There is no GG.
Sports Research CoQ10 100 mg1/5 checks metSports Research has a short ingredient list and a Certified Vegan softgel, made from plants. It holds ubiquinone, the older form, and you would take two a day. The oil is coconut MCT oil, not olive oil, and there is no GG.
Nature Made CoQ10 200 mg1/5 checks metNature Made is a familiar name, and it carries the USP Verified seal. That seal means an outside group checked that the bottle holds what its label says. Inside is ubiquinone, the older form, in soybean oil.
Qunol Ultra CoQ10 100 mg0/5 checks metQunol Ultra 100 mg is easy to find. Each softgel holds ubiquinone, the older form, so you would take two a day. The label also lists palm oil, polysorbate 80 and added vitamin E.

Here is the whole EQ10 label, line by line. It is short on purpose, so it is easy to read at any age.

Ubiquinol CoQ10, Kaneka®200 mg †
Trans-geranylgeraniol, GG60 mg †
† Daily Value not established.
Other ingredients: olive oil, the fat-soluble carrier; gelatin; glycerin; purified water; ascorbyl palmitate, an antioxidant.
Ubiquinol, 200 mg
The first line is ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form of CoQ10, the form your blood already carries. It is made by Kaneka, the company named in check one.
It helps replenish CoQ10 levels*, and it supports energy*. All 200 mg sit in one softgel.
GG, 60 mg
The second line is GG, short for geranylgeraniol. It is the building block a statin also blocks.
It sits next to the CoQ10 in the same softgel. So one softgel a day adds back both.
Olive oil, the carrier
Under the amounts come the other ingredients. Olive oil is listed first. It is the carrier, the oil the CoQ10 and the GG are dissolved in.
Then gelatin, glycerin and purified water, which make the softgel shell. Last is ascorbyl palmitate, a form of vitamin C that keeps the oil fresh.
A small softgel, easy to swallow. Take it in the morning, with food. It is made to take every day, for months.
