What's the Best CoQ10? Five Lines on the Back Label Tell You
Five lines on a CoQ10 back label show what's inside. The big-name bottles here meet one each. EQ10 meets all five.

The best CoQ10 is the one whose back label meets five checks. The front of the bottle can't tell you which one that is. The back can, in about a minute.
CoQ10, short for coenzyme Q10, is something your own body makes. Your cells use it to turn food into energy. CoQ10 levels drop with age*.
Many people who buy CoQ10 also take a statin, the daily pill for cholesterol. Blood CoQ10 goes down on a statin. That has been measured.
So you go looking for a bottle. At Costco it's Kirkland, the store's own brand. At the pharmacy it's often Qunol.
Online there are hundreds more. They all say CoQ10 on the front. The back shows what's different: the form of CoQ10, the amount in one softgel, and the oil it sits in.
This page reads that back label with you, one line at a time. Then it sets four of the biggest names next to EQ10. EQ10 is a CoQ10 softgel made for people who take a statin.
Five lines to read
Five lines on the back decide which CoQ10 is best
Every CoQ10 bottle has a Supplement Facts box on the back. It's the panel with the amounts, the same kind you see on vitamins.
Right under it is a line called Other ingredients. Between those two spots are the five checks. Together they tell you almost everything about the softgel.
Each check gets its own short part below. It says what the line is, why it matters, and where to find it.
Check 1 of 5 · Form
Form: which kind of CoQ10 is inside
Form
CoQ10 comes in two forms. Ubiquinol is the ready-to-use form. It's the form your blood already carries.
Ubiquinone is the older form of CoQ10. Your body has to change it into ubiquinol first.
The front of a bottle rarely says which form is inside. Both kinds are sold simply as CoQ10.
Of the four big names on this page, two hold ubiquinol: Life Extension and Qunol Mega. Kirkland and Doctor's Best hold ubiquinone, the older form.
If you're picking a CoQ10 to take every day, pick the form your blood already carries.
In the Supplement Facts box, find the CoQ10 line. It starts with Coenzyme Q10, or with the word Ubiquinol.
If that line says ubiquinol, it meets this check. Ubiquinone, or no form named at all, is the older form.
Many ubiquinol labels also name Kaneka, the Japanese company that made the first ubiquinol.
Check 2 of 5 · Dose
Dose: how much is in one softgel
Dose
The biggest thing on the front of most bottles is a number. It's the dose, in mg, short for milligrams.
That number is how much CoQ10 sits in one softgel. It isn't the whole bottle.
This page counts 200 mg a day as the mark to hit. That's the amount used in many CoQ10 studies, including studies of people on a statin.
Some softgels hold 100 mg each. You'd take two a day to get there, and that adds up to the same amount.
This check is about getting it all in one softgel. One a day is easier to keep up, next to any other pills you take.
Kirkland prints the biggest number here, 300 mg in each softgel. But a big number alone doesn't settle it. The oil and the rest of the formula decide how much reaches your blood.
Find Serving size at the top of the box. If it says one softgel, read the mg on the CoQ10 line.
If the serving size says 2 softgels, halve the number. That gives you the amount in one.
200 mg or more in one softgel meets this check.
Check 3 of 5 · Carrier
Carrier: the oil the CoQ10 is dissolved in

Carrier
CoQ10 is a lot like butter. It dissolves in fat, not in water.
So a good softgel holds the CoQ10 already dissolved in an oil. That oil is called the carrier.
Your body takes CoQ10 in along with fat. In head-to-head studies, a capsule of dry powder, with no oil, came last. CoQ10 in oil came first.
Not every oil is the same. Olive oil is the plain kitchen oil many people prefer, so it gets the check. Doctor's Best uses extra virgin olive oil, and that's the check it meets here.
Kirkland uses soybean oil. Qunol Mega uses MCT oil, a refined oil, made here from palm oil. Both miss, because soybean oil and palm oil are on the Clean label list in check 5.
Life Extension uses sunflower oil. Any named oil like that still carries the CoQ10, so it's close, but not quite.
Read the first oil under Other ingredients. Olive oil meets this check.
Another named oil, like sunflower oil, is close but not quite. Soybean oil, palm-oil MCT, or no oil at all misses it.
Check 4 of 5 · GG
GG: the building block a statin also blocks

GG
GG is short for geranylgeraniol. It's a building block your own body makes.
It comes from the same pathway as CoQ10. A pathway is a chain of steps inside your cells. GG is made on the branch that isn't CoQ10.
Many people who buy CoQ10 take a statin. A statin works on that same pathway and turns it down.
Blood CoQ10 goes down on a statin. A statin also blocks GG.
Most CoQ10 bottles only put CoQ10 back. EQ10 adds GG back too. The idea: refill and restart, not just refill.
In other words, put back both CoQ10 and GG, not only CoQ10. None of the four big names on this page lists GG.
If you take a statin, this is the check that sets bottles apart.
Look right under the CoQ10 line in the Supplement Facts box. GG gets a line of its own, with an amount next to it.
It may say geranylgeraniol, or GG. No line means no GG.
Check 5 of 5 · Clean label
Clean label: what else is in the softgel
Clean label
Under the Supplement Facts box there's a line most people skip. It starts with Other ingredients.
It lists everything else in the softgel: the shell, the oil, and anything added to help the factory.
You'll take this every day, maybe for years. So a short list, where each part has a reason to be there, is the one to want.
Gelatin, glycerin and water are fine. They're what a softgel shell is made of.
Kirkland and Doctor's Best both list soy lecithin, a soy-based additive. Qunol Mega lists palm oil and polysorbate 80, a man-made additive that helps oil and water mix.
Life Extension lists sunflower lecithin, an additive made from sunflowers. It isn't on the list, but a softgel doesn't need it either. So it's close, but not quite.
Read the whole Other ingredients line. It should have no palm oil, no soybean oil, no polysorbate 80 and no soy lecithin.
It should also have no added vitamin E, an extra vitamin a CoQ10 softgel doesn't need. And no titanium dioxide, a white coloring.
Nothing on it should be bioengineered, the word US labels use for genetically modified.

Five back labels, side by side
Here are the four big names next to EQ10, each read from its own back label. EQ10 comes first, in the amber column.
Each column head shows how many of the five checks that bottle meets. Price has a row too, in words, but it doesn't count toward that.

Bottle by bottle
Each bottle: what it does well, and what it misses
EQ10 Active CoQ10 · Statin Support5/5 checks metEQ10 meets all five checks. It holds 200 mg of Kaneka ubiquinol in one softgel, dissolved in olive oil. It's also the one bottle here with GG, the building block a statin also blocks.
Life Extension Super Ubiquinol 100 mg1/5 checks metIt holds Kaneka ubiquinol, the same form as EQ10. Each softgel has 100 mg, so you'd take two a day. It sits in sunflower oil, not olive oil, and there's no GG.
Qunol Mega Ubiquinol 100 mg1/5 checks metIt also holds Kaneka ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form. Each softgel has 100 mg, so you'd take two a day. The oil is MCT oil made from palm oil, and the label lists polysorbate 80, a mixing additive.
Doctor's Best CoQ10 100 mg softgels1/5 checks metIts softgels sit in extra virgin olive oil. They carry the USP Verified seal, an outside group's check that the bottle holds what the label says. But the form is ubiquinone, the older form, and the label lists soy lecithin.
Kirkland Signature CoQ10 300 mg1/5 checks metKirkland has the biggest number here, and it costs the least for each milligram. It carries the USP Verified seal. But it holds ubiquinone, the older form, dissolved in soybean oil with soy lecithin added.
Inside EQ10
Inside one EQ10 softgel
EQ10 is a CoQ10 softgel made for people who take a statin. Here is its whole label, line by line.

Ubiquinol, 200 mg
The first line is ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form of CoQ10. It comes from Kaneka, the Japanese company that made the first ubiquinol. It helps replenish CoQ10 levels*.
One softgel holds 200 mg. So one a day is enough.
GG, 60 mg
The second line is GG, short for geranylgeraniol. It's the building block a statin also blocks. EQ10 adds it back.
The idea: refill and restart, not just refill. That second line is why EQ10 was made for people on a statin.
Olive oil, and the shell
Under that come the other ingredients. Olive oil is the carrier, the oil the ubiquinol and GG are dissolved in.
Gelatin, glycerin and purified water make the softgel shell. Ascorbyl palmitate, a form of vitamin C, keeps the oil fresh. Nothing else is on the label.
Here's what is not on it:
- No palm oil
- No soybean oil
- No polysorbate 80
- No soy lecithin
- Nothing bioengineered
Take one small softgel a day, in the morning with food. Blood levels take about two weeks to settle. It's made to take every day, for months, not days.
Answers
Picking a CoQ10, answered
Which CoQ10 brand is the best?
The name on the front matters less than the back label. A good one holds ubiquinol, with 200 mg in one softgel.
It's dissolved in olive oil, it has GG, and the rest of the list is short. EQ10 is the one bottle on this page that meets all five checks.
What is the most absorbable CoQ10?
CoQ10 dissolves in fat, so pick one that is already dissolved in oil. Take it with a meal.
Ubiquinol is also the form your blood already carries. So ubiquinol in olive oil gets both the form and the oil right.
Does a USP Verified seal mean a CoQ10 is good?
The USP Verified seal is a mark from an outside group. It checks that the bottle holds what the label says.
It doesn't check the form, the oil or GG. Kirkland and Doctor's Best both carry the seal, and both still miss four of the checks.
Which CoQ10 brands should I avoid?
No brand name tells you that. The label does.
Read its Other ingredients line. Put it back if it lists palm oil, soybean oil, polysorbate 80, soy lecithin, added vitamin E or titanium dioxide.
How much CoQ10 should I take a day?
200 mg a day is the amount used in many CoQ10 studies. So this page uses it as the mark.
Look at how much sits in one softgel, not in the whole bottle. One EQ10 softgel holds 200 mg, so it's one a day, in the morning with food.
In short
What the five labels showed
On this page, the four big names met one check each. EQ10 met all five.
Here are the five checks once more:
- Form: ubiquinol, the ready-to-use form
- Dose: 200 mg or more in one softgel
- Carrier: dissolved in olive oil
- GG: its own line, right under the CoQ10
- Clean label: none of the additives from check 5
They work on any brand. If you'd rather not read every label, EQ10 meets all five checks.
